As many have mentioned here, I like the added detail on the second sculpt. It's a very Frank Miller-esque design. But obviously it's the articulation that pushes it over the edge for me.
I do think the color scheme on the second Bats is a bit off. If the gray is going to be that dark, the blue has to be even darker, in my opinion--or alternatively, the gray should be brighter to match the blue. Therefore, the black-white repaint Bats is my current favorite Batman action figure.
I don't really see why so many people prefer the Hush head to the Horsemen's sculpt, though. I think the Horsemen's Bat-head looks fine, particularly on the black-white repaint.

if it could be up to me, id make all future batmen in the style of series 1 of DCSH. but, S3 has more articulation, so it's better.
truth to be told, at first, i didnt like the S3 sculpt at all, as he looks far too much like the superman figure. but, after reading about the HUSH story on wikipedia, and watching batman begins about 100 times in a week (which the horsemen based the figure on, not jim lee's art apparently) it grew on me. over this past summer, i repainted the S3 figure to black/grey and he is now one of my favorite figures. besides, the S3 figure is more of a modern look, while the series 1 figure is more of the 70's lean, neal adams art (btw, why did mattel not use at least the upper torso to help achieve that look better?)
it could also be because i never got S1 batman. either works .
p.s. ditko, do you have any extra AA batmen youd be willing to trade away. i kinda have this weird love of that figure. i think i need help

There are elements to both that I like.
That's why I kitbashed the fave bits of both together. With a Hush head.
Which looks like this next to the S3 one:

That's nice! I think the paint apps are perfect! It took me a lot of looking to find a wv3 Batman that wasn't over washed in gray.
Besides the Hush head, what else did you swap? Just the cape, belt and gloves? I think the repaint is what makes the Hush head look so good on your kitbash.

You got it. I had to smooth off the texture of the Ser. 3 gloves and widen the hole inside to let them swap off with the Ser. 1 hands, which are really soft and swap on and off easy. And yeah, the repaint really helps.

That's a very nice custom job.
I have tons of Batman figures that I've collected over the years. DC Direct, Kenner, Hasbro, Mattel, you name it.
And I have to the Mattel's Black Grey repaint Batman is the definitive Batman figure. I am amazed at how well done this figure is.
