Man, at what point does this just become a crazy attack on this man? People aren't allowed to make mistakes? I don't agree with pretty much anything he said or did but it was years ago and by all accounts, he is not that person now. Disney should have stepped up and defended the man he's become rather than be bullied by these internet losers with a vendetta.
This. Gunn was specifically targeted by these people for his political views. If all of us are going to be held to the standards of the worst mistakes of our pasts there will be no-one left to make movies. I have done some UGLY crap that I wouldn't want to be remembered for. This is getting out of control and is being used to silence people like Gunn for speaking up against the current atrocities we are facing. This is wrong and dangerous, and if Disney had ANY guts or a lick of common sense, they would be standing up for Gunn against these Un-American smears.

James Gunn Will Not Be Rehired For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

SuperHeroHype

Aug 16, 2018

According to Variety, Disney and Marvel have decided to firmly stand by their decision to not rehire Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn back for the third installment. The decision was finalized after Gunn’s meeting with Disney’s chairman Alan Horn, which the outlet described as a civil and professional meeting.

The outlet also reports that even though Marvel president Kevin Feige wasn’t able to the attend the meeting because he was out of town, Feige also stands by the decision of not reinstating Gunn back to Guardians 3. However, the studio is reportedly still considering using the script that Gunn penned for the film, the absence of which is a deal breaker for co-star Dave Bautista.

It was previously reported that Marvel was trying to convince Disney to potentially re-sign Gunn in the wake of the controversy. Meanwhile, rival studios including Warner Bros. are said to be very eager to approach Gunn with projects once his exit from Marvel/Disney is fully executed. Essentially, this means that Gunn’s career will only suffer a minor hiccup from his current situation.

Back in July, Walt Disney Studios dismissed Gunn from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to Gunn’s past controversial tweets. Despite this, the Guardians of the Galaxy‘s main cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn and Bautista, who all still supported him and asked for Disney to reinstate Gunn as the film’s director.

Earlier this year, director James Gunn revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be released in 2020. Filming was scheduled to start this Fall in Atlanta, but it is unknown if the film will keep to this schedule. The third Guardians film was meant to be the final outing for the original team lineup, and set up future films in the cosmic arena of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This is the first time I have ever truly regretted the fact that Disney owns Marvel.

REPORT: Travis Knight May Be Marvel’s Choice For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

SuperHeroHype

Nov 16, 2018

James Gunn’s firing from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise prompted Marvel Studios to postpone the series’ third installment earlier this summer. Now, it looks like we might finally have some new information on who could replace him. According to The DisInsider, the studio is rumored to be eyeing Travis Knight to helm the film.

Knight began his professional career as an animator, working on films like Coraline and ParaNorman. He made his directorial debut with Kubo and the Two Strings in 2016. That film was critically acclaimed and landed Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Visual Effects. Next month will see the release of his first live-action film, Bumblebee, a prequel to Michael Bay’s Transformers. Knight’s experience with family-friendly cinema could make him a respectable choice to take over the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Nevertheless, there’s still a legion of fans hoping for Gunn to be reinstated despite Disney standing by their original judgment. Just two weeks ago, a billboard calling for the director’s rehiring showed up near Disneyland in Anaheim. Even Drax himself, Dave Bautista, has said that he won’t return for another installment if Gunn’s script for the film isn’t used.

When Gunn was still attached to direct, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was preparing to start shooting in 2019. It was eyeing a theatrical release for the following year, but no precise date was given. Last month, however, Marvel dropped an unnamed movie scheduled for July 31, 2020 from its upcoming slate. This fueled speculation that the next Guardians film would be coming much later than anticipated. But if a new director is hired soon, they could potentially reclaim this date on the calendar and move forward as initially planned.

It’s important to note that this is only a rumor and hasn’t been confirmed by Marvel.

From ComicBookMovie:

Chris Pratt Promises That GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Is Still Happening

We now know for sure that James Gunn won't be at the helm of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 but Chris Pratt has gone on record to say that Marvel Studios plans to "wrap up a trilogy in a meaningful way."

Josh Wilding | 2/3/2019 | Source: Variety

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was supposed to be released in 2020 but James Gunn's firing put the brakes on the threequel and Disney wasted no time in sending crew members home who had already assembled for pre-production.

Since then, the fate of the movie has remained somewhat unclear. While Marvel Studios has reportedly talked to a number of filmmakers, it seems as if they're reluctant to try and follow in Gunn's footsteps, especially as you know critics would never stop comparing that version of Vol. 3 to what might have been (the same thing happened to Ant-Man after Edgar Wright's departure).

For what it's worth, Chris Pratt has now insisted that the movie is still in the works. "I promise there’ll be a third movie, I don’t know exactly what that’s going to look like, but I know everyone on board is just eager to give the fans what they want and wrap up a trilogy in a meaningful way."

"We’re still circling the city of Jericho, I like to say," Pratt added in what's hopefully a sign that things are looking up for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

It's definitely going to be interesting seeing how Marvel Studios handles things from here because it's hard to imagine them wanting the publicity that could come with releasing Vol. 3 in the same year as James Gunn's The Suicide Squad movie. However, it was supposed to launch a Cosmic Universe for the studio so they'll only want to hold off on that for so long, one might think.

Chris Pratt Says Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Will Use James Gunn’s Script

SuperHeroHype

Feb 07, 2019

Although James Gunn won’t be sitting in the director’s chair, Marvel continues to promise that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is going to happen. Gunn is currently working for the Distinguished Competition on Suicide Squad 2. But if it’s any consolation to fans, his influence will be felt when Marvel resumes production on the next installment of their cosmic franchise. Star-Lord himself, Chris Pratt, said as much during a recent interview with MTV News.

Pratt addressed the elephant in the room while plugging his role in this week’s The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. Pratt had nothing but praise for Gunn’s script for Guardians 3, which he insists is “off the chain.” Obviously, Pratt owes Gunn a lot, since the first Guardians film established him as a viable action star after he spent several years starring as Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation. But when asked how he’ll feel heading into the project without Gunn at the helm, Pratt seemed very optimistic.

“Well, I love James,” said Pratt. “I’m loyal to James and I love him so much. And we’re gonna deliver the movie. We’re gonna give the fans what they deserve. And I think it’s in the nature of the Guardians of the Galaxy to come together and get the job done, and that’s what we’ll do.”

Shortly after Gunn’s firing, Pratt joined his fellow Guardians in writing an open letter calling for the director’s reinstatement. Unfortunately, Disney ignored their request, and the film was placed on indefinite hold. Travis Knight, Adam McKay, and Taika Waititi were all rumored to be contenders to replace Gunn. However, none of these rumors turned out to be true.

Kevin Feige Says James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Script Will Be Used

SuperHeroHype

Friday, February 22, 2019

Last summer, James Gunn was removed from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 over offensive tweets that he wrote a decade earlier. It was one of the most controversial moments in the history of the MCU. While the cast and fan sentiment has largely supported Gunn’s reinstatement, Marvel and Disney showed little interest in rehiring him. Fortunately, it appears that Gunn’s final Guardians story will still be told.

Via CinemaBlend, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 script will be used. And he also appeared to downplay Gunn’s previous role as the architect of the MCU’s cosmic movies.

“His influence was Guardians,” said Feige. “It was Guardians. It was his input on Guardians and the Avengers films, as you’ve seen in Infinity War, and on the Guardians 3 script, which we’re still using. So you’ll see that influence…I think online, sort of the notion of ‘architect across multiple cosmic things’ was slightly blown out of proportion.”

However, as noted by ComicBook.com, Gunn went on the record about his architect role while speaking to IGN in 2017. Gunn’s comments also made his job sound more important than Feige implied.

“It’s already a part of what I’m doing with Marvel and the conversations that Kevin and I have every day,” said Gunn. “When we’re talking about Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and that story, that’s a story that will lead to other stories. It’s innate to the DNA that that’s the end of a trilogy but it’s the beginning of a whole other element of the Marvel Cosmic universe. That’s a part of what I’m doing now.”

Gunn is currently writing The Suicide Squad, with an eye to direct the film for Warner Brothers. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still without a new director or a start date.

James Gunn Reacts To His Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Return

SuperHeroHype

Friday, March 15, 2019

As noted earlier today, Disney and Marvel Studios have rehired James Gunn to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn was fired from the film last July over lewd tweets he posted several years ago. Subsequently, Gunn took a long break from social media. However, in the wake of this latest announcement, Gunn broke his eight-month silence to thank fans for their support.

Image

Gunn’s old tweets were unearthed last summer by two far-right personalities in retribution for Gunn’s criticism of the current President. Before taking his sabbatical from Twitter, Gunn accepted the studio’s verdict and apologized for his remarks. Moreover, he acknowledged that his tweets were jokes made in poor taste and insisted they didn’t reflect his actual views. Deadline’s report indicated that Gunn’s apology played a big role in Disney’s decision to bring him back for Guardians 3.

Gunn’s firing prompted several fans and celebrities to lash out at Disney and Marvel. The Guardians themselves–Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper–famously penned an open letter to the studio asking them to reconsider their position. None of the actors have commented on Gunn’s return yet. But given their fierce loyalty, it’s only a matter of time before they chime in with a response.

Despite his dismissal, Gunn had no problem finding a new gig afterwards. Warner Bros. quickly hired him to write and direct their The Suicide Squad sequel/reboot, which starts filming later this year. Gunn will return to helm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 once that movie wraps production.

So lemme see if I got this straight ...

We're gonna get Suicide Squad 2, written and directed by James Gunn.

Then we're gonna get Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, written and directed by James Gunn.

We win ... and the right wing nut bar trolls ... lose.

It's going to be a fine day, my friends.

It's going to be a fine, fine day indeed.

Report: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 May Film in 2020

Can director James Gunn handle The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in such an accelerated time span?

SuperHeroHype

Tuesday, April 30, 2019

Even though Marvel Studios is currently in its Endgame with the latest Avengers film, there are big plans ahead for Phase 4. The Hollywood Reporter provided a lengthy report talking about what’s next on the slate for Marvel Studios. According to this story, the third Guardians of the Galaxy film could go into production as soon as 2020.

THR’s report says “Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is planned for a 2020 shoot — the current five stars are expected to reunite — with James Gunn back in the saddle as director.” However, it doesn’t seem to take into account that Gunn is slated to film The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. Assuming that The Suicide Squad goes into production sometime this fall, Gunn could begin pre-production for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 early next year. However, that’s still a very tight schedule.

Marvel Studio still hasn’t revealed its Phase 4 plans. But Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 should definitely play a huge part in that. The sequel may even introduce Adam Warlock, as teased in one of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s post-credit sequences.

Outside of the Guardians, other heroes are also slated to return. Marvel has already confirmed a follow-up to Black Panther with the return of director Ryan Coogler. Sequels to Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange are in the works as well. Additionally, the Black Widow movie and The Eternals should film sometime this year, along with the recently announced adaptation of Shang-Chi.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters now. The next MCU film will be Spider-Man: Far From Home, which hits on July 2.
