| I must confess I find it slightly amusing that the JLU figures are superglued into the JLU stands and still fall over. Granted, everything is pretty much superglued at SDCC, but still. |

Ha! I noticed the same thing. Hopefully someone at Mattel gets sick of fixing them and decides to make the figures better. |

And it's a wrap!
So many people to thank, so little time.
First, a big thanks to the toy companies: Georg Brewer, Shawn Knapp, Jim Fletcher and Syndee Barwick of DC Direct, Scott Neitlich, Bill Benecke and the Four Horsemen of Mattel, Michelle Favaloro, Scott George and David Vonner of Hasbro's Marvel team, Randy Falk of NECA and Chuck Terceira of Diamond Select toys. Thanks for putting up with me, guys and gals!
The Critical Mess guys are awesome! JQ3x29yz4a, aka David Galan, Chooch, Ou Sooner 1997 and Mike S. I had a blast, guys!
The Fwoosh crew was there as usual. Always great to see them.
It was great to see Bam-Bam again. And it was fun to meet FALLEN ELDOR. Australian Brad!, thanks again for coming out of "lurk" mode and joining us here on the forums. And thanks for introducing yourself at Dan's panel. It's always great to meet an AFIer in person.
Finally, a big thank you to the AFI crew, those that went and those that stayed home. Dan P, Jason, Peter, Ryan, Dan N, Jim, Erik and Jeff. THANK YOU for everything, gents!
I've got to especially thank Peter Go, aka vader, for all he does for us behind the scenes. To say that he goes above and beyond the call of duty is a massive understatement. Your Gleek is on his way, Peter! Enjoy!
Thanks again, everybody! We'll see you next year! July 22-25, 2009!
Mike

And a HUGE thanks to you, Mike!
Seeing you every year is one of my few joys of attending ComicCon.
This year it seemed like I had even less time to do anything or see anyone due to all the stuff I had to accomplish for my job on top of site stuff. I did get to see/meet BamBam, Chooch, and Nikon, and saw a couple of Fwoosh guys passing in the hall but not at panels (heck, I missed half of both of AFi's panels!) I even saw some old co-workers sitting against a wall in the hallways but was late to a meeting and couldn't stop to say hello. All the running around really sucked.
But I think I had a better time this year than the past 5 or 6 times I've gone. Dunno why, but I was definitely more into enjoying it than usual.
Must be that 30" Anti-Monitor I found sitting in my car. Ah well, finders keepers...

From The San Diego Union Tribune
Task force backs bigger convention center
It's unclear how the city would raise needed funds
By Jeanette Steele
Union-Tribune Staff Writer
2:00 a.m. September 1, 2009
Plans for a $753 million expansion of the San Diego Convention Center won a task force's endorsement yesterday despite the objections of one member who said more should be known about how the project will be funded.
The vote was 15-1, with Lani Lutar of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association voting no.
After the meeting, Lutar said that if San Diego is asked to raise taxes or tap other public money — such as downtown redevelopment dollars — to pay for the expansion, the trade-offs should be discussed first.
Without that information, she said, “it's impossible to say whether the convention center is or is not worth pursuing.”
The issue now goes back to City Hall, where Mayor Jerry Sanders is expected to test the business community's support for increasing the city's hotel-motel tax or a new tax on food and beverage sales. Another possibility is creating a special assessment at certain hotels to help pay for the expansion.
Most observers think it will be some or all of the above, plus cash from the San Diego Unified Port District and possibly San Diego's downtown redevelopment agency or the county.
“It will be a cobbling together of things,” said task force member Steve Cushman, who is also port chairman.
Cushman has long said the port doesn't have money to pitch in this time, after paying for all or part of the first two phases of the convention center. However, people close to the project say it's likely the port will be on the short list of funding sources.
Cushman said he expects the city to come calling.
“I'll be happy to give them the same briefing,” he said after the meeting.
To pay for a new convention center wing, the city needs to come up with an estimated $44 million to $53 million annually in new revenue.
If the political will is there to raise taxes or spend public dollars, regulatory hurtles lie ahead, including getting permission from the California Coastal Commission to build a proposed 500-room hotel nearby.
The city's convention center agency also needs to find $14 million by December to buy out the lease on the land next to the existing bayfront building. |
