Rinsch Exits Logan's Run Director's Chair

Source: Heat Vision

November 12, 2010

Carl Eric Rinsch is not on board to direct Logan's Run for Warner Bros. Pictures anymore. Instead he will devote his energy on Universal's 47 Ronin, which is a go picture.

To star Keanu Reeves, 47 Ronin is an epic period film based on the true tale of a band of samurai swordsmen who avenged the death of their master in 18th century Japan. It is scheduled for a November 21, 2012 release.

Logan's Run is expected to be low-tech science fiction in a futuristic setting and hew closer to the book than the 1976 movie. The premise sees a future society that demands the death of everyone upon reaching a certain age. Anyone who veers from that destiny is dubbed a "runner" and is hunted by operatives known as Sandmen. Logan is a Sandman who is forced to go on the run.

Warner Bros. has not set a release date yet for the film, which was was written by Alex Garland.

Ryan Gosling to Star in Logan's Run?

Source: ComingSoon

February 10, 2011

Warner Bros. may have found a director and star for its long-gestating re-adaptation of William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson's 1967 sci-fi novel Logan's Run. Deadline is reporting that Nicolas Winding Refn will direct, reteaming with his Drive leading man, Ryan Gosling.

Gosling will potentialy star as Logan 5 (a role played by Michael York in the 1976 adaptation) a police officer called a "Sandman" who, in the futuristic society of the story, is responsible for hunting down "runners": those who refuse to submit when, at age thirty (21 in the novel), they're removed from society.

The original film also starred Jenny Agutter and featured appearances by Farrah Fawcett and Peter Ustinov. It was also the basis for a spinoff television series while the novel itself launched two sequels, "Logan's World" and "Logan's Search."

Nicolas Winding Refn Talks Logan's Run

Source: ComingSoon

June 24, 2011

Though their Drive doesn't hit theaters until September 16th, the first Nicolas Winding Refn/Ryan Gosling teaming is already receiving rave festival reviews and paving the way for multiple upcoming collaborations. Twitch has confirmed that Gosling is set to headline the director's next, Only God Forgives, while Refn himself spoke with The LA Times about their potential remake of Logan's Run for Warner Brothers.

The Gosling/Refn iteration, first announced earlier this year as a re-adaptation of William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson's 1967 sci-fi novel, has been long-gestating.

Gosling will potentialy star as Logan 5 (a role played by Michael York in the 1976 film version) a police officer called a "Sandman" who, in the futuristic society of the story, is responsible for hunting down "runners": those who refuse to submit when, at age thirty (21 in the novel), they're removed from society.

"'Logan's Run' is dated in the sense that everything came true," Refn says, "They've been trying to make it for years with the notion of just trying to remake the original movie. And it has to be rethought... We'll put together a team of futurists and artists and we'll dream on this world."

William Beall, known for his work on the television series "Castle" and for the upcoming Gangster Squad, is set to draft and, as Gosling explains, there's no rush:

"Joel [Silver] said the other night, 'Take your time and make it good. It doesn't have to be ready at any point.'"

The original film also starred Jenny Agutter and featured appearances by Farrah Fawcett and Peter Ustinov. It was also the basis for a spinoff television series while the novel itself launched two sequels, "Logan's World" and "Logan's Search."

Ryan Gosling Exits Logan's Run

Source: ComingSoon

October 25, 2012

While no specific reason was given, Variety's Justin Kroll posted on Twitter that Ryan Gosling is no longer attached to the Logan's Run movie. There's no word whether his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn will still direct as was previously reported.

The 1976 original starred Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett. It was based on a 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. The premise sees a future society that demands the death of everyone upon reaching a certain age. Anyone who veers from that destiny is dubbed a "runner" and is hunted by operatives known as Sandmen. Logan is a Sandman who is forced to go on the run.

The new Warner Bros. movie is expected to be low-tech science fiction in a futuristic setting and hew closer to the book than the 1976 movie.

Bioshock Creator Ken Levine Takes on Logan's Run

Source: ComingSoon

June 18, 2013

Bioshock Infinite is one of the hottest video games going right now even months after its March 26 release, and wisely, the movie studios are taking notice as Warner Bros. has just hired Ken Levine, creator of the "Bioshock" franchise, to take over writing duties on the long-delayed, long-in-development planned reworking of the 1976 sci-fi cult classic Logan's Run.

According to the Deadline story, writing the movie would be a passion project for the former screenwriter and playwright who has become one of the most influential figures in video gaming in recent years.

Based on the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson which was set in 2116, the general concept of the movie involved a society where all people are willingly executed at the age of 21 as a means of population control. Those who chose not to go to "Carousel" would become "runners" who would have their lives ended much less pleasantly. The 1976 movie starred Michael York as Logan 5, one such runner who has reached the maximum age of 30 so he heads out into the world outside his safe domed city.

Many filmmakers have tried to get this movie made with Warner Bros, including Bryan Singer, Danish auteur Nicolas Winding Refn and former WB house producer Joel Silver, but Levine probably has just the right vision from the success of his "Bioshock" games which he'll continue to oversee while working on the screenplay.

Logan’s Run Remake Eyeing Female Lead?

By ComingSoon

April 7, 2015

For years now, Warner Bros. Pictures has been trying to get a remake of the 1976 classic Logan’s Run going, most recently with BioShock creator Ken Levine penning a draft and previously with Ryan Gosling re-teaming with his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn. Now, Tracking Board brings word that the script for the remake has been retooled to change things up by making the lead character a female. This remains unconfirmed, so check back here for further details.

The 1976 original starred Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett. It was based on a 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. The premise sees a future society that demands the death of everyone upon reaching a certain age. Anyone who veers from that destiny is dubbed a “runner” and is hunted by operatives known as Sandmen. Logan is a Sandman who is forced to go on the run.

It was previously reported that the new Warner Bros. movie is expected to be low-tech science fiction in a futuristic setting and hew closer to the book than the 1976 movie, though after countless different screenplays it’s unclear what the plan might be.

Simon Kinberg to Write and Produce Logan’s Run Remake

By ComingSoon

July 22, 2015

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Simon Kinberg will be the latest person to try and bring a remake of Logan’s Run to life at Warner Bros. The X-Men: Days of Future Past and Fantastic Four writer/producer will script the film and produce alongside Joel Silver. A report from earlier this year indicated that the gender for the lead character may have been swapped, but with Kinberg penning a new draft this is potentially no longer the case.

There have been numerous attempts at remaking the classic film before, previously with BioShock creator Ken Levine penning a draft and before that with Ryan Gosling and his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn developing a take on the material. Other drafts of the film were written by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later), Will Beal (Gangster Squad), and Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation).
