Actually, the proof is in the profitable viability of a line in any given retailer's eyes.
DCIH continued to lose ground in comparison to other, similar scaled and similar priced toy lines. No matter how much money Mattel may have saved in making all those repaints, without a retailer to buy them, its just a wasted resource.
Look at JLU for further dispute of your reasoning. The vast majority of that line is a newly sculpted head on a re-usable body buck. Over and over and over again we, as a collective mass, were often amazed how many figures they could turn out by just giving us a new head. Yet, it too, is going the way of the Dodo.
While I would've liked to have been given many many more figures in both lines, the reality is there just isn't enough interest at RETAIL to justify the costs, resources, space, etc.
and for me, at least, once a line gets to the point of staying viable but offering cheap repaints, that is the "final nail" anyway and I expect it to be gone sooner rather than later.

I haven't even started on the possible repaints with just a new head, I'm still working on translucent recasts.

I was noticing today that the 4" GL Kilowog has the right posture for doing a custom Swamp Thing or Man Thing figure, and the coloration on the one from the 2 pack is about the same as the Kenner Swamp Thing.

I have started a new project. I decided to document it, just for fun. I found this happy meal Hulk while out walking my dog. Free is good. Note the scraping damage. Also note the protrusion on the back. The body has a spring inside of it to make Hulk grow. My first step was to cut this off. I do not need to grind it smooth. I am turning this into Solomon Grundy, so most of the body will be covered by the coat. CCC.

Step 2 was to prepaint. This gets the paint on the arms and chest under the coat. It also gets the ankles painted before adding the putty for the boots. CCC.

How big is Hulk? Is he JLU sized? I might want one to make Blockbuster.

Next I made a paper pattern of the coat to establish the size and spacing of the arm holes. CCC.

It'll be cool to watch the progression on the jacket for Grundy as sculpting coats and stuff has been troublesome for me. The Legion is looking fantastic.

Soliciting some opinions.
I want to do a Guardian conversion. I want to convert Ganthet (when he comes out) and Sayd to Blue Lantern Guardians, but I am debating keeping them like the movie look or covering the armor in the V of the collar for a more comic look. The advantage of the latter is obvious, and for the former look it would keep them consistent with the existing figures.
