Dwight Yoakam to Battle The Lone Ranger?

By SuperHeroHype

July 19, 2011

Helena Bonham Carter, James Badge Dale and Barry Pepper also in talks

Casting is moving steadily forward on Gore Verbinki's The Lone Ranger. Variety reports that Helena Bonham Carter, James Badge Dale, Barry Pepper and Dwight Yoakam are all in talks to appear.

Described by Verbinksi as "'Don Quixote' told from Sancho Panza's point of view," the film will star Armie Hammer as the titular western hero with Johnny Depp as his Native American sidekick, Tonto. Ruth Wilson and Tom Wilkinson are also expected to appear.

Yoakam would portray the film's central villain, Butch Cavendish with Carter a brothel madam and Pepper appearing as 7th Cavalry Captain J. Fuller. Dale's potential role, meanwhile, is that of Dan Reid, brother to the Ranger's alter ego, John Reid. (Though it is now a very separate property, the original radio program suggested that the Reids of The Lone Ranger were the ancestors of Britt Reid, AKA The Green Hornet).

Production should begin later this year with a release planned for December 21, 2012.

Warner Bros. Takes The Red Star

By SuperHeroHype

July 19, 2011

Neal Mortiz to produce the comic book adaptation

Warner Bros. has taken over the rights to the film version of the comic book series The Red Star, says a story at The Hollywood Reporter. Neal Mortiz is attached to develop the property.

Set in an alternate reality's Soviet Russia, the series' world blends magic and technology. The official site describes the book as follows.

An award-winning graphic novel, "The Red Star" is about an epic battle in a world of militarized sorcery and monolithic technology, where -- unknown to all but a few -- the ghosts of old soldiers continue to fight alongside the living.

First launched in 1999 by Image Comics, The Red Star was created by Christian Gossett who, along with his creative team, launched Archangel Studios in 2002 and self-published subsequent issues.

Moritz is no stranger to comic book properties. He produced this year's The Green Hornet and is currently set to produce the adaptation of the Dark Horse miniseries R.I.P.D. with Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges headlining.

The Amazing Spider-Man Reveals First Action Figure

By SuperHeroHype

July 19, 2011

Based on the costume featured in the 2012 Marc Webb film

Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man still has about a year before he swings into theaters on July 3, 2012 and when he does, there's sure to be no shortage of movie merchandise. USA Today is ahead of the game, though, debuting images of the very first action figure based on Webb's take on the wall-crawler.

Featuring 20 points of articulation, the movie costume version of Andrew Garfield's Spidey features a metallic finish with a special golden tint to the eyes that is said to change depending on how the light hits them.

If you're heading down to San Diego, you can check out the figure in person at Hasbro's display booth on the convention floor.

SDCC: The Darkness II Delayed Until Early 2012

Source: ComingSoon

July 19, 2011

2K Games announced today that The Darkness II, for all previously announced video game consoles and PC, is now planned for release on February 7, 2012 in North America and February 10, 2012 internationally. Currently in development with Digital Extremes and based on the supernatural horror comic book series created by Top Cow Productions, Inc., The Darkness II delivers a brutal and personal narrative as gamers take control of Jackie Estacado, head of a New York crime family and wielder of an ancient and ruthless force of chaos and destruction known as the Darkness.

Additionally, 2K Games announced their presence at San Diego Comic-Con and will co-host a special panel featuring The Darkness I, entitled "Spreading The Darkness: From Comic Book to Video Games and Entertainment," in celebration of the 15th Anniversary of "The Darkness." The discussion around The Darkness II will feature top talent from Top Cow Productions, including CEO and co-creator of "The Darkness," Marc Silvestri, and President and COO of Top Cow, Matt Hawkins; developers from Digital Extremes; and in-game voice of the Darkness, Mike Patton. The panel will take place on Thursday, July 21, 2011, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. PDT in Room 9 within the San Diego Comic-Con convention center.

2K Games will also have eight playable demo kiosks of The Darkness II in the Top Cow booth (#2629) on the San Diego Comic-Con show floor for fans to descend into the gritty and visceral mind of Jackie Estacado.

The Darkness II is the sequel to the million unit-selling 2007 title, The Darkness, and brings a unique new combat mechanic through Quad-Wielding, which will allow players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with two Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. The game is layered with thematic elements of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and maintains the stylistic violence visualized through a hand-painted graphic noir technique, true to its comic book origins.

Gargoyles Finds Its Writers

Source: ComingSoon

July 19, 2011

Disney has been trying to get a Gargoyles project to fly for some time now.

The proposed film isn't tied to the animated series or the made-for-television flick of the same name. Instead, this is a new property the Mouse House hopes to exploit across various platforms - film, television, video games, theme parks, etc.

That said, Variety reports Disney has hired writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett to pen a script. They're the duo that gave us G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Lauren Shuler Donner will produce. The film is being considered for live-action.

Cast Announced for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Source: ComingSoon

July 19, 2011

Lionsgate has announced the cast for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D which includes cameos by cast members of the original classic film. Filming is set to start in Shreveport, Louisiana:

Lionsgate and the filmmakers of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3D, the next installment in the long standing franchise, are pleased to announce the cast of the film, which picks up the story where the original 1974 film left off and will deliver a new chapter in the Leatherface saga with the goal of making it as horrifying as the original -- in 3D.

The cast includes an all new actor in the iconic villain role of Leatherface, an exciting cast of principle actors, and featured cameos by several cast members of the original 1974 film, famously directed by Tobe Hooper.

About The Cast
GUNNAR HANSEN, the original Leatherface who has never acted in another Texas Chainsaw franchise film, is set to appear in a cameo, with MARILYN BURNS, the original film’s lead actress, playing the role of Verna Carson. Reprising his role as the Grandfather, JOHN DUGAN also makes his first series appearance since the original film.

Beloved character actor BILL MOSELEY, who played the role of Choptop in Tobe Hooper’s 1983 sequel, will play Drayton Sawyer in this film. Moseley will be standing in for Jim Siedow, who previously played the part before his passing in 2003. The two actors appeared together in the 1983 film and were quite comfortable together. Director Luessenhop explains how “Moseley is the perfect choice to capture some of the essence that Siedow had brought to the character.”

Playing Leatherface will be discovery DAN YEAGER. Director John Lussenhop knew he was perfect for the role immediately, after a chance meeting. He describes the 6’ 6” actor as having “huge farm boy arms, a brooding brow. He’s quiet, circumspect, and immediately struck a menacing chord with me. After five minutes, I could no longer think of anyone else for the role.”

ALEXANDRA DADDARIO (PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF, HALL PASS) has been cast in the lead female role of Heather Miller. The story centers around Heather, as she makes a trip to small-town Texas to collect her inheritance, unaware that her inheritance includes a live item – her cousin, the notorious serial killer Leatherface.

Rounding out the cast of friends visiting the inherited house are TANIA RAYMONDE (“Lost”) playing the role of Heather’s best friend Nikki, with acclaimed R&B singer TREY SONGZ making his film debut as Heather’s boyfriend Ryan and KERAM MALICKI-SANCHEZ (PUNISHER: WAR ZONE and JOHN Q) as Ryan’s friend. SHAUN SIPOS (“Melrose Place,” FINAL DESTINATION 2 and the upcoming HICK) plays Darryl in the film, a hitchhiker along for the ride who knows more than he lets on.

An all new cast of law enforcement and government professionals take on Leatherface in this chapter of the saga: THOM BARRY (THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, INDEPENDENCE DAY, “Cold Case,”) plays the role of Sheriff Hooper, with PAUL RAE (TRUE GRIT) in the role of town mayor Burt Hartman. SCOTT EASTWOOD (FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, INVICTUS, GRAN TORINO) will portray Deputy Carl Hartman, a young officer who is battling a powerful attraction to Heather while hunting Leatherface. Noted character actor RICHARD RIEHLE (OFFICE SPACE) will play Sawyers family attorney Farnsworth.

SDCC: The Darkness Movie in the Works

By SuperHeroHype

July 19, 2011

Based on the Top Cow comic book

24 Frames is reporting that Mandeville Films (The Fighter) is taking the Top Cow comic book "The Darkness" to the big screen. Created by Marc Silvestri, Garth Ennis and David Wohl in 1996, "The Darkness" has yielded more than 115 books and sold 25 million copies around the world. It's also spawned a popular video game, with a sequel set to come out on February 7, 2012. The title is described in detail below:

Before time was time, the Earth was formless and void and darkness stretched over the surface of the deep. Then God said "Let there be light." And there was light, and God saw that it was good. So, being the guy that he is, he decided to meddle some more and separate the light from the darkness. And the darkness? The Darkness resented it. In that moment, a bitterness and spite was born that would fester and grow for centuries, distilling itself to raw, seething perfection. Ages would pass before The Darkness found a vessel worthy to inherit its boundless hatred. The vessel was mankind, God's most favored of all his creations.

The Darkness found fertile ground for its chaotic lust in the bloodline of a family thought barely human by its fellow man: the Estacados. Each new generation inherited the gifts of The Darkness, spreading misery and unyielding chaos across the kingdoms of man. When each bearer conceived an offspring the curse of The Darkness would betray its host, leaving him to die as it bound itself to the newly innocent life, like wolves to a slaughter of defenseless lambs.

Each new vessel was steered to its inevitable ruin by The Darkness. Murderers and thieves. Rapists and warlords. The Darkness thrived upon the death and devastation spread by its host and its unsuitable appetite only grew with each new generation.

In our generation, The Darkness took root in Jackie Estacado, an orphan, as all the bearers before him, raised by pimps and thieves–The Franchetti Crime Family. Like those who walked in the shadow of The Darkness before him, Jackie's powers manifested on his 21st birthday. In that moment he was both blessed and cursed. The elemental force of chaos granted Jackie a limitless power, access to an otherworldly dimension and control over the demons that dwell there. He could do anything now and just as the men who did so before him, he was sure to pay the direst of costs.

His newfound powers served Jackie well as a mob enforcer, dealing death with effortless finesse, as The Darkness grew thick and fat. Despite Jackie's best efforts however, tragedy and death dogged him at every turn until the very things that he loved and valued were ripped away from his grasp. He had become an enemy of all that he ever loved. An enemy of the very heavens. An enemy of his family. An enemy of the only woman he had ever loved. And an enemy of himself.

While tragedy is the burden of The Darkness, Jackie has faired better than any host who had come before him. He has defied The Darkness even at his weakest moments. He has developed more control over his carnal nature than any who came before him. Jackie's charisma, ambivalent attitude and desire to maintain control over his own life are not just those traits which set him apart from his forefathers cursed by The Darkness; they are also the very things which may one day save his soul.

DC Comics Wins Dispute Over ManofSteel.com

By SuperHeroHype

July 20, 2011

Likely will be the official site's URL

Fusible.com reports that a single-member Panel of the National Arbitration Forum ruled that the ManofSteel.com domain name be transferred from its current owner to DC Comics who had filed a domain dispute in late June. It is likely where the official site for director Zack Snyder's Superman movie Man of Steel will now reside. The site says:

The panelist, James A. Carmody, Esq., said that manofsteel.com is identical to DC Comics’ trademarks — ”MAN OF STEEL” (registered in 1999) and THE MAN OF STEEL (registered in 1987). The panelist also found that because the domain name resolved to a website which displayed links and advertisements, that the respondent’s use of the domain name was neither a bona fide offering of goods or services, nor a legitimate noncommercial or fair use. The panelist also found that registration and use of manofsteel.com demonstrated bad faith. The respondent in the dispute, Coni c/o LBR Enterprises, failed to submit a response.

SDCC: LEGO Teams with Marvel and DC

By SuperHeroHype

July 20, 2011

For Marvel's The Avengers, Batman, Superman and more

LEGO has announced, in two separate press releases, that it is teaming with Marvel and is continuing its relationship with DC Entertainment. First up is the Marvel announcement:

Two of the world's most iconic brands are joining forces as The LEGO Group, world leader in high quality construction toys, and Marvel Entertainment, LLC, a global character -based entertainment company, announced a wide ranging strategic licensing deal. Through the multi-year agreement starting as of January 1st, 2012, Marvel has granted LEGO Group the rights to develop a distinct Marvel branded construction toy collection -- LEGO SUPER HEROES -- which will bring the characters, vehicles and action of Marvel's renowned universe to the world of LEGO® build-and-play adventure. The LEGO SUPER HEROES Marvel collection's initial construction sets, minifigures and buildable characters are scheduled to launch in May of 2012.

The LEGO SUPER HEROES Marvel collection will spotlight three Marvel franchises – Marvel's The Avengers movie, and X-Men and Spider-Man classic characters. The LEGO Marvel's The Avengers movie line brings such ever popular Marvel characters as Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Loki and Black Widow to LEGO minifigure form. The LEGO X-Men collection includes minifigure comic versions of Wolverine, Magneto, Nick Fury and Deadpool, while the LEGO Spider-Man sets offer minifigure comic versions of Spider-Man, and Doctor Octopus. The first buildable characters in the LEGO SUPER HEROES collection are highlighted by Captain America, The Hulk and Iron Man. Select figures will be unveiled in the LEGO booth (#2829) during Comic-Con International at the San Diego Convention Center July 21-24.

"Our partnership with Marvel helps us continue to deliver some of the best and most constructible Super Hero stories of all time," said Jill Wilfert, vice president, licensing and entertainment for The LEGO Group. "We're thrilled to partner with Marvel to create creative, constructive play sets for builders, fans and collectors alike."

Joann Mclaughlin, Executive Vice President Toys & Hardlines, Marvel Entertainment, commented, "The partnership with LEGO Group furthers Marvel's strategy to align our brand with the best in class leaders across various industries who have the global marketing expertise and distribution clout to stand out in the retail environment. This deal solidifies the already robust presence of our characters and the overall Marvel brand in the ever important toy category."

The retail debut of the Marvel-inspired LEGO SUPER HEROES collection is timed to coincide with the highly anticipated Summer 2012 blockbuster movie release of Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures feature film Marvel's The Avengers.

And here is the DC Entertainment announcement:

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) with DC Entertainment (DCE) and The LEGO Group announced today the extension of their successful partnership to translate some of the world's most popular DC Comics Super Heroes into the world of LEGO® build-and-play adventures with LEGO DC Universe SUPER HEROES. The multi-year licensing agreement grants the world leader in high quality construction toys access to the entire library of DC Comics characters and stories to inspire LEGO building fun. Construction sets, minifigures and buildable characters and creatures inspired by the universe of DC Comics are slated to launch in January 2012.

The new LEGO DC Universe SUPER HEROES collection will feature 13 iconic super heroes in LEGO minifigure form, including: Batman™, Robin™, Catwoman™, The Joker, The Riddler™, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn™, Bane, Bruce Wayne, Superman™, Lex Luthor™ and Wonder Woman™. Buildable characters will include Batman, The Joker and Green Lantern. Select figures will be on display in the LEGO booth (#2829) at Comic-Con International at the San Diego Convention Center July 21-24.

"We have enjoyed a successful, longstanding relationship with The LEGO Group and this agreement enables the vast universe of DC Comics to inspire an array of incredible offerings," said Karen McTier, executive vice president, domestic licensing and worldwide marketing, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. "Fans of our legendary Super Heroes and villains will be delighted with the uniquely imaginative creations which only LEGO Group can create."

The company will revisit their previous successful collections like LEGO BATMAN™ that also inspired the best-selling LEGO BATMAN: The Videogame, published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, which has sold more than 12 million units worldwide since its launch in 2008.

"Given the fan enthusiasm for previous LEGO BATMAN collections, we couldn't be more thrilled to continue the build-and-play adventures with new LEGO BATMAN play sets and the addition of other DC Comics properties," said Jill Wilfert, vice president, licensing and entertainment for The LEGO Group. "This partnership gives builders a chance to recreate the characters, vehicles and worlds of some of the most iconic Super Heroes, so they can relive the action and even customize it – a proven and winning formula in LEGO construction."

At San Diego Comic-Con, 3,000 exclusive Batman and Green Lantern LEGO minifigures will be distributed to kick off a promotion that will take place from August to December in advance of the launch. Source: ComingSoon

July 20, 2011

Entertainment Weekly has a first look at new Comic-Con artwork for The CW's "Ringer," starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kristoffer Polaha, Ioan Gruffudd, Nestor Carbonell and Tara Summers. The show, premiering on September 13, is described as follows:

Gellar stars as a woman who, after witnessing a murder, goes on the run, hiding out by assuming the life of her wealthy identical twin sister – only to learn that her sister's seemingly idyllic life is just as complicated and dangerous as the one she's trying to leave behind. Bridget is six months sober and starting to turn her life around when she is the sole witness to a professional hit. Despite the assurances of her FBI protector, Agent Victor Machado, Bridget knows her life is on the line. She flees to New York, telling no one, not even her Narcotics Anonymous sponsor, Malcolm. In New York, Bridget reunites with her estranged twin, Siobhan. Wealthy, pampered and married to the strikingly handsome Andrew Martin, Siobhan lives what appears to be a fairy tale life – a life where no one knows that Bridget exists. The sisters seem to be mending their frayed relationship, until Siobhan disappears overboard during a boat trip, and Bridget makes the split decision to take on her sister's identity. She discovers shocking secrets, not only about her sister and her marriage, but also about Siobhan's best friend, Gemma, and Gemma's husband, Henry. And when someone tries to kill Bridget in her sister's penthouse, she realizes she is no safer as Siobhan than she is as herself.

Before STAR WARS: THE COMPLETE SAGA hits shelves on September 16, fans can get a sneak peak at the 40+ hours of bonus footage on the Blu-ray collection through the Star Wars Blu-ray: Early Access App. The App, available for all iDevices including the iPad and iPhone will highlight a sampling of bonus materials featured in the Blu-ray collection, including never-before-seen content sourced from the Lucasfilm Archives such as matte paintings and concept art; prop, maquette and costume turnarounds; supplementary interviews with cast and crew; and more.

The Star Wars Blu-ray: Early Access App will be available for free download at the iTunes store on July 20th for iPad and for all iDevices in August.

For fans lucky enough to score a ticket to Comic-Con, stop by booth #3528 to check out the App and get an even bigger sneak peek at the Blu-ray Disc and experience one of the Saga’s most iconic moments from a unique, in-universe vantage point!
