Comic-Con: Check out the Poster for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim

by SuperHeroHype

July 07, 2012

Warner Bros. Pictures has revealed the Comic-Con poster for director Guillermo del Toro's 2013 giant robots vs. giant monster movie Pacific Rim, starring Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff, which you can see below.

In the film, legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, start rising from the sea and begin a war that would takes millions of lives and consumes humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim opens July 12, 2013, and its Comic-Con panel is on Saturday, July 14, at 2:30 PM.

Christopher Nolan Speaks From His Handprint Ceremony

by SuperHeroHype

July 07, 2012

This morning, Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California was host to a special ceremony to commemorate the work of filmmaker Christopher Nolan whose latest, The Dark Knight Rises is set to hit theaters later this month.

After an opening speech by director Michael Mann, Nolan was joined by cast members Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Morgan Freeman and many other creative partners (including his wife and producer, Emma Thomas and his brother and co-screenwriter, Jonathan Nolan).

ComingSoon.net was on-hand for the event and managed to catch a brief word with Nolan at the tail end of the ceremony, pointing out that, for someone whose work has featured a recurring motif of permanent objects standing in as a barometer on reality (the Polaroids in Memento and the totems in Inception), it doesn't get much more permanent than dried cement.

"I think that's an astute observation," Nolan said. "There is something about the permanence of these things. I'm standing on Clint Eastwood's name right now and there's something about knowing that he actually wrote that. There's something very interesting about that phenomenon of trying to preserve something and trying to hang onto it."

Also starring Tom Hardy and Marion Cotillard, The Dark Knight Rises hits regular and IMAX theaters on July 20th.

Box Office: The Amazing Spider-Man Webs Up $140 Million

Source: ComingSoon

July 8, 2012

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.

The 4th of July has come and gone and Sony Pictures' The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Sally Field and directed by Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer), won its opening weekend, taking first place with $65 million in 4,318 theaters. It opened on Tuesday, July 3, with $35 million then dropped off on Wednesday and Thursday but then picked up steam on Friday and held up well over the weekend to score the fourth-highest Independence Day weekend opening behind Michael Bay's first and third "Transformers" movies and Spider-Man 2. It also scored the highest daily gross for the 4th of July on Wednesday.

The movie opened domestically on 307 IMAX screens where it grossed $14.3 million over the six days, a little over 10% of the domestic business.

Internationally, the movie expanded into 57 more territories after opening in Asia last weekend and added another $129.1 million to bring its international total to $201.6 million. Its total worldwide gross is currently $341.2 million.

Seth MacFarlane's R-rated comedy Ted, co-starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, dropped to second place with $32.6 million, a respectable 40% drop, having grossed $120.2 million in just ten days, putting it in the black compared to its $50 million budget. It opened in Australia on Friday and had a great first weekend of $13.1 million putting it at #1 ahead of Spidey and making it Universal's biggest opening in that country.

Disney•Pixar's Brave retained third place with $20.1 million, down roughly 41% from last weekend, bringing its total to $174.5 million.

Oliver Stone had another minor hit with his drug-fueld crime-thriller Savages (Universal), starring Aaron Johnson, Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, John Travolta, Salma Hayek and Benicio del Toro, which took fourth place with an estimated $16.6 million in 2,628 theaters, defying some expectations. As hard as it may be to believe, it's Stone's third-biggest opening after 2010's Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and 2006's World Trade Center, and it should be good to become another $50 million grosser for the Oscar-winning filmmaker.

Steven Soderbergh's stripper drama Magic Mike (Warner Bros.), starring Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey, took a massive 60% plunge in its second weekend, taking fifth place with $15.6 million and bringing its total to $72.8 million, a solid sum compared to its reported $7 million budget. The movie seems to very much be a Friday phenomenon as it once again took a massive plunge from Friday to Saturday.

Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection, co-starring Eugene Levy and Denise Richards, dropped to sixth place with $10.2 million and $23.7 million total.

Seventh place went to DreamWorks Animation's hit animated threequel Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (Paramount), which added another $7.7 million to its total gross of $196 million, which makes it the most successful movie in that franchise domestically.

Pop singer Katy Perry (no relation to Tyler) got her very own 3D concert doc called Katy Perry: Part of Me (Paramount), which took in $3.1 million on Thursday and then added another $7.1 million over the weekend for a four-day gross of $10.2 million.

Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom (Focus Features) continues to do big business (comparatively), taking ninth place with $4.6 million, off just 11% from its first weekend in wide release, to bring its total to just under $27 million.

After two weeks in limited release, Woody Allen's latest To Rome With Love (Sony Pictures Classics) expanded nationwide into 806 theaters where it brought in $3.5 million to take tenth place. it has grossed $5.3 million since opening two weeks ago.

This week's Top 10 took in roughly $183 million, which is a 29% increase over the same weekend last year when Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon remained at #1 with $47.1 million followed by the comedies Horrible Bosses and Zookeeper with $28.3 and $20 million, respectively.

Fox's Ice Age: Continental Divide continues to be huge overseas even before its July 13th North American opening, adding another $80.6 million to bring its international gross to $198 million.

Christopher Nolan on The Dark Knight Rises' Literary Inspiration

by SuperHeroHype

July 08, 2012

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."

With what is arguably the most famous opening line in all of literature, Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities" paints a portrait of the class struggle taking place in Europe in the late 18th century. In less than two weeks, it's a theme that Christopher Nolan is employing to bring about the conclusion of his Batman trilogy with the release of The Dark Knight Rises.

Speaking at this morning's press conference for the film, Nolan and his brother and screenwriting partner, Jonathan, answered SuperheroHype's question about the film's direct and indirect allusions to Dickens' masterpiece.

"When Jonah showed me his first draft of his screenplay, it was 400 pages long or something," says the director. "It had all this crazy stuff in it. As part of a primer when he handed it to me, he said, 'You've got to think of 'A Tale of Two Cities' which, of course, you've read.' I said, 'Absolutely.' I read the script and was a little baffled by a few things and realized that I'd never read 'A Tale of Two Cities'. It was just one of those things that I thought I had done. Then I got it, read it and absolutely loved it and got completely what he was talking about... When I did my draft on the script, it was all about 'A Tale of Two Cities'."

Although The Dark Knight Rises was even during production, noted for its savvy connection to real-world sociopolitical events, Jonathan Nolan points out that the film's exploration of class warfare is not limited to a present day struggle.

"Chris and David started developing the story in 2008 right after the second film came out," he says. "Before the recession. Before Occupy Wall Street or any of that. Rather than being influenced by that, I was looking to old good books and good movies. Good literature for inspiration... What I always felt like we needed to do in a third film was, for lack of a better term, go there. All of these films have threatened to turn Gotham inside out and to collapse it on itself. None of them have actually achieved that until this film. 'A Tale of Two Cities' was, to me, one of the most harrowing portrait of a relatable, recognizable civilization that completely folded to pieces with the terrors in Paris in France in that period. It's hard to imagine that things can go that badly wrong."

Beyond the narrative's themes of a class dichotomy, the epic scale of Dickens' tome also matched Nolan's vision of how to conclude his cinematic trilogy.

"It just felt exactly the right thing for the world we were dealing with," says the director. "What Dickens does in that book in terms of having all his characters come together in one unified story with all these thematic elements and all this great emotionalism and drama, it was exactly the tone we were looking for."

The Dark Knight Rises arrives in regular theaters and in IMAX on July 20th.

Michael Fassbender Takes an Assassin's Creed

by SuperHeroHype

July 09, 2012

Variety reports that the planned movie adaptation of Ubisoft's popular video game Assassin's Creed is moving forward with Michael Fassbender attached to star in and co-produce the movie.

Originally, the Assassin's Creed movie was going to be produced in conjunction with Sony Pictures but those negotiations were put on hold and Ubisoft has decided to finance and produce the film independently through their recently-launched Ubisoft Motion Pictures (UMP) division with former EuropaCorp CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet running the show.

The original game involves a bartender named Desmond Miles, captured by a secret organization with ties to the Knight Templar who repeatedly send Miles back in time into the body of his assassin ancestors to retrieve valuable historical artifacts, the first time going back to the Crusades. Presumably, Fassbender would be playing Miles, even though that's not stated in the story.

Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet, said about the actor:

"Michael Fassbender was our first choice. Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."

The various "Assassin's Creed" games have sold over 30 million units since the first game's debut in 2007 with "Assassin's Creed III" scheduled for October 30. Ubisoft has big plans to turn the games into a movie franchise, but they first have to find a writer and director, which they'll probably do before going out to studios, including Sony.

"We're open to re-discuss with the key studios once the production package is finalized," Baronnet told Variety. "Whatever the financial model, UMP will limit its risk investment." According to the story, they also will save on production costs by using some of the in-house game studios to handle visual effects for the movies.

The Variety story also mentions that the company wants to adapt "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell" and "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon" into films and are developing an animated television series based on the "Raving Rabbids" for Nickelodeon.

Chris Nolan Says 'No' to Justice League

by SuperHeroHype

July 09, 2012

It shouldn't be that big of a surprise to us, but it sure is a disappointment - Christopher Nolan will not be helping in any capacity with a Justice League film. When asked in an Associated Press interview whether he had plans for the movie, his reply was simple.

"No, none at all," Nolan said. "We're finished with all we're doing with Batman. This is the end of our take on this character."

Easy enough, but it seems he's cutting off any hopes we might have had of him doing any other DC property all together.

He also said he [does] not intend to get involved with any future solo Batman films when distributor Warner Bros., which owns DC Comics, decides the time is right to launch a new take on the masked vigilante.

"Batman will outlive us all, and our interpretation was ours. Obviously, we consider it definitive and kind of finished. The great thing about Batman is he lives on for future generations to reinterpret, and obviously, Warners will have to decide in the future what they're going to do with him," Nolan said. "We've had our say on the character. ...

"I've got no plans to do anything more, and certainly, no involvement with any 'Justice League' project."

There you have it, you may begin your period of mourning.

Official: Philip Seymour Hoffman Joins The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Source: ComingSoon

July 9, 2012

Lionsgate and the filmmakers of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire have announced that Philip Seymour Hoffman has been cast in the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, Head Gamemaker for The Hunger Games, in the adaptation of Suzanne Collins' worldwide smash hit novel "Catching Fire."

The actor and filmmaker just wrapped a Broadway run as Willy Loman in the revival of "Death of a Salesman" for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. He will next be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master and the indie film A Late Quartet alongside Catherine Keener and Christopher Walken. More recent films include Moneyball, The Ides of March and Jack Goes Boating, which marked Hoffman’s feature directorial debut.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour' of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has over 36 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.

Lionsgate will release The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on November 22, 2013.

Keri Russell to Star in Scott Stewart's Dark Skies

Source: ComingSoon

July 9, 2012

Blumhouse Productions (Insidious, Paranormal Activity, Sinister) and Dimension Films announced today that Keri Russell will star in the upcoming supernatural thriller Dark Skies, written and directed by Scott Stewart (Priest, Legion). Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions are producing the film alongside Alliance Films which will fully finance the picture.

Dimension Films will distribute the film in the U.S. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Alliance Films' Charles Layton will executive produce. Alliance Films will distribute in Canada, in the UK (via its Momentum Pictures subsidiary) and in Spain (via Aurum). Octane, IM Global's genre division, is handling international rights.

The film, scheduled to go into production this summer, is described as a psychological thriller about a suburban couple whose lives become a nightmare when a terrifying alien presence enters their home each night to prey upon their children. Increasingly isolated from skeptical friends and neighbors, the couple is forced to take matters into their own hands to save their family.

"Scott has written a terrifying script and Keri is the perfect actress to help bring his vision to the big screen," said Jason Blum. "Blumhouse is excited to work with Dimension and Alliance on sharing 'Dark Skies' with fans across the world."
