Don't know if anyone knows about this, or has more info, but I heard and read the last 2 days that Mattel let the Barbie and Fisher Price licenses expire with Hallmark. So that means no more Christmas ornaments based on those properties. There was no 2012 Hot Wheels ornament either, after several years of those. which could mean the end of that line as well.

Allegedly, Mattel has said that they want the Barbie empire to "go in a different direction", whatever that means.

That's kinda funny.

I was just in a Hallmark store last night and they already had their Christmas ornament display up. Barbie and some Car type items were very prominently on display so I'm not sure if this is real news or just some rumor that is going around and being mis-interpreted.

It would not surprise me one bit. They seem to rub everyone the wrong way.

Just checked out the Hallmark Keepsake Ornament site and they have quite a few new ornaments for 2012 this month. Batman, Barbie, Green Lantern, Fisher Price; etc. So unless these will be the last we see, I would think that the rumor may be just that...a rumor.

2012 is supposed to be the last year. I heard it from a Hallmark store owner, 2 collectors at the store, and read it at www.yulelog.com/forums. Would this get answered in the questions for Matty thread?

I'd believe it. The offerings this year kinda suck.

My son loves the Lionel trains. This is the first year that they're plastic and not metal. :?

I was really enjoying getting a new DC character every year. The last 4 years I've gotten a Batman, Superman, Flash and GL ornament. This year all they have is Batman movie stuff and for some crazy reason, GL movie stuff.

Perhaps Mattel is cooking up a deal with Enesco (or whatever the American Greetings equivilant for ornaments is called)?

The Batman "Black Bale" out this year has a rubber-like material for the cape. First I've seen this... if they do this again I will not be buying their future cheap ornaments.

They have also been doing cost-cutting on the clam shell packaging for the ornaments. Using wrapping paper to secure the ornaments in their boxes instead of plastic figure-formed containers.

Hallmark is obviously trying to reduce costs. Not sure if this ties into the Mattel issue, but it's worth noting.

Regards,

gd

that would be surprising (as would Carlton Cards), because Hallmark has so many retail outlets, and up till recently, a history of quality merchandise.
