Two new movies entered the marketplace in wide release and two more movies fell far behind the biggest movie of the late summer as Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises (Warner Bros.) remained on top for the third weekend in a row with roughly $36 million. Despite a big 60% drop in its second weekend, it held out better in its third weekend, being down just 41%, and so far it's grossed $354 million domestically, making it the third-highest grossing movie of the year. $5.7 million of this weekend was made in IMAX theaters bringing its domestic IMAX total to $48 million. Worldwide, The Dark Knight Rises has now earned $733 million.
The movie expected to give The Dark Knight Rises some sort of competition was director Len (Underworld) Wiseman's sci-fi action-thriller remake Total Recall (Sony), starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale and Bryan Cranston, but after an opening day of $9.1 million, it ended up opening in second place with an estimated $26 million in 3,601 theaters. According to Sony, the audience for the movie was 58% male and 53% over 30, although the C+ CinemaScore it received does not bode well for legs domestically. The movie reportedly cost $150 million to make.
Total Recall fared slightly better overseas where it opened in 12 Asian markets including India, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan and Singapore, all where it took the top spot, bringing in $6.2 million in those countries. (Of interest is that the original name of one of the impoverished and overcrowded section of earth called "New Asia" was changed to "The Colony" possibly to not offend Sony's Asian markets.)

GQ was talking to The Dark Knight Rises costume designer Lindy Hemming and she let out some details for a deleted scene in the film, though in her defense she didn't know it was deleted because she hasn't seen the movie yet. Here's the excerpts:
GQ: What!? You haven't seen the movie yet?
Lindy Hemming: It's not out in England yet, but the other thing that you should have seen during that sequence is him being injured in his youth. So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury. Even if he hasn't got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he's learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he's wearing an early version of his waist belt. It's showing support, but it's not the finished one he eventually wears. He's also wearing an early version of his gas mask, all glued together.
GQ: I remember one scene where we see his face covered in bandages, is this what you're referring to?
Lindy Hemming: Well, if you look at the film, unless they've cut it—and I'm sure they haven't—there's a whole early section for Tom Hardy where he's fighting and being taunted by people. He's got chains on him, and he's standing on a wooden thing while people are attacking him. And in that scene, he's wearing a much more ragged, primitive version of the mask.
GQ: I think that Bane scene must've been cut...
Lindy Hemming: Well that's an awful shame, but I suppose you have to cut things. I won't elaborate on it too much, because it isn't in the film, but there was another section that showed you why he had the mask and where it came from.
Sounds pretty rough, which would make sense for several of these concept designs for his back scar. Visual effects artist Sebastian Lochmann posted these photos of some designs for Bane's back injury and they're pretty gruesome.
ComingSoon.net has posted the weekend box office estimates which show that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises actually climbed a spot to fifth its sixth weekend in theaters. Here's the update:
Moving up a spot into fifth place was Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, which brought in another $7.2 million its sixth weekend in theaters. Produced for $250 million, Nolan's third and final Batman movie has earned $422.2 million domestically and $519 million internationally for a worldwide total of $941.2 million.

In case you didn't know, there has been a much exploited rumor in the past week about an alleged director's cut for The Dark Knight Rises that would include 30 additional minutes of footage that was cut from the film. Today it has been confirmed that not only are there no plans for a director's cut release of the film, a director's cut doesn't even exist.
The Playlist got word from Christopher Nolan's reps about the situation, saying, "insiders close to the director confirmed to us yesterday that no such plans exist, and reports of an extended cut of the film are completely false."
There you have it, it's done. Stay tuned here for details about the actual home video release.

In The Dark Knight Rises, it has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.
But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.
The Dark Knight Rises has earned $1.067 billion at the worldwide box office.

ComingSoon.net has posted an interesting article on whether The Dark Knight Rises could get any of the big nominations (and possible wins) at the Oscars. Here's an excerpt:
"'The Dark Knight Rises' Oscar question is an interesting one, especially when we get into the Best Picture territory, since many people felt that 'The Dark Knight' should have gotten in and may have been snubbed merely by the limitation to five Best Picture nominations that year.
"Four years later, we have a sliding scale of nominations, but we also have a movie that's not nearly as strong as 'Dark Knight' and many wonder whether the Academy will just do the same as they did for Peter Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy and give Nolan everything this time.
"The question is whether the 'Dark Knight' trilogy is really one that has had that same kind of support among Academy members up until this movie and the answer is 'no.' Neither 'Batman Begins' nor 'The Dark Knight' received Best Picture nominations and while the various branches agree that the films are technically proficient enough for awards, overall, they're still seen as comic book/superhero movies. Since 'TDKR' is closer to 'Batman Begins' than 'The Dark Knight' (which was very much a 'Heat'-like crime story), we're probably going to see another Best Picture snub, and probably only technical awards.
Obviously, enough Oscar voters liked Heath Ledger's performance to give him a posthumous Oscar as well as awarding it tech awards, but the directors won't give Nolan a nomination for anything, and if they wouldn't do it for 'Inception,' a far superior movie, I can't see them doing so for 'TDKR' either.

The Dark Knight Rises will neither get nor deserve an Oscar nomination. The comparison to Return Of The King is laughable.
I agree. The whole Heath Ledger nomination was due to his death. If look in the past the Academy has done this plenty of times. Had he lived, that nomination would never have happened. It wasn't because Dark Knight was a good movie or that his performance wasn't good but the fact he died and the Academy always love honoring the fallen performers who post posthumous make it into the spotlight.
Coincidentally timed to today's DVD and Blu-ray release of The Dark Knight Rises, ComingSoon.net had the opportunity to speak with former Batman franchise director Joel Schumacher at last week's Plus Camerimage festival in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Speaking about a number of past projects in his career, the Batman Forever and Batman & Robin director noted his fondness for Christopher Nolan's reboot of the Dark Knight.
"I think what's very interesting about Batman and how brilliant Chris Nolan is is, if you look at the last Batman, ours were at a much simpler time," Schumacher says. "Our job was to entertain the whole family. To make it fun and sell a lot of toys. It was a franchise. The last one is really about what we're going through, the extraordinary gap between the haves and the have-nots... I think right now the last Batman is very reflective of the times we're living in, which are scary times. I'm not a predictor of revolutions and I don't think there will be one in the United States, but there are the seeds of it. When you have too many poor and too many rich, those are the seeds of revolution."
At age 73, Schumacher is still going strong as a director and tells ComingSoon.net that he may soon head to China for a still-unknown production. You can check out the full interview by clicking here.

The difference there is that The Dark Knight was actually a great film and would have deserved an Oscar nomination had it gotten one. In fact, its snub was a big part of the reason the Academy changed the rules to allow more than five Best Picture nods. Most critics agreed that it was an inexcusable oversight. And whether or not Ledger deserved to win the Oscar is debatable (you are right that his death WAS a factor in the win) but he certainly at least deserved to be nominated.
The Dark Knight Rises is in neither that film nor The Return Of The King's league. Not even close.
