The Poster for Sam Raimi's Oz The Great and Powerful!

Source: ComingSoon

July 4, 2012

Walt Disney Pictures has released the poster for director Sam Raimi's Oz The Great and Powerful, the fantasy adventure opening on March 8, 2013 and starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff.

The film imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot--fame and fortune are his for the taking--that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Kunis), Evanora (Weisz) and Glinda (Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity--and even a bit of wizardry--Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

Looks interesting. Unfortunately, Disney tried this decades ago and had a huge flop with "Return to Oz." The marketing described it as a sequel to the Judy Garland movie and it wasn't at all. A much closer adaption of a couple of the books. No singing and dancing and it was a train wreck.

It looks like they are going down the same road here, which is unfortunate as it could be a good film.

Hope I'm wrong. :|

Ive been reading through the original books in my "spare" time, and, aside from the racism and language that were typical for the time, I don't recall them being quite so ... dark.

I'm glad to see we will be spending more time in around the greater Oz and meeting many more of its citizens, but there are things in that trailer that make me question whether or not to bring my son.

But, yeah, I'm pretty excited about it.

Rachel Weisz Reveals Oz The Great and Powerful Character Details

Source: ComingSoon

January 7, 2013

Sam Raimi's L. Frank Baum-inspired Oz The Great and Powerful is set to hit theaters in just two months and, today, actress Rachel Weisz spoke with The Sun about her character, the Wicked Witch of the East.

“It was a fun idea to be playing someone who is really, really bad," Weisz told the outlet. "I can’t think of any roles that I’ve had like that before... She’s really, really a bad person and she revels in being bad.”

Weisz joins a cast that includes James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff, and Joey King, set in the magical world created by L. Frank Baum.

“It’s a Disney film," Weisz continues, "so I shouldn’t say she is ‘turned on’ by evil, but that’s what it is like... She enjoys it, like the meaner she is the more pleasure she gets."

Oz The Great and Powerful hits theaters in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D on March 8.
