April 1, 2011

So, in case you haven’t heard, Mattel is making a concerted effort to get in closer touch with the fans by heading out to various smaller conventions this year (well, at least smaller than SDCC…) and hanging out and meeting with fans of all of the collector based properties they’re working on. It’s known as their "MATTY COLLECTOR.COM: COLLECTOR APPRECIATION TOUR 2011", and it looks like it’s gonna’ be a blast.

Their next stop is this weekend (April 1st – April 3rd) at WonderCon 2011 in San Francisco, and they’ve invited the us, the Four Horsemen, to come along and host a panel about toy design methods and materials!

Unfortunately, due to our current busy schedule, all four of us aren’t going to be able to attend but we will have one representative there. Our very own Italian stallion and all around lovable lug, Jim "Good Enough" Preziosi will be there to handle all things Four Horsemen related and to hang out with all of the fans at Mattel’s booth (booth #436).

Here’s a description of the "Methods & Materials: Sculpting with Mattel & the Four Horsemen" panel that Jim will be hosting at WonderCon:  "Do you want to know the basic aspects of sculpting and fabrication? Would you love to get an inside peek at the materials and tools used in creating all of your favorite action figures? Come to this instructional panel where Jim Preziosi (Four Horsemen Toy Design Studios) and members of the Mattel Design Team will take you through the process."

The panel is on Saturday, April 2nd from 3pm to 4pm in room #104.

Not only will Jim Preziosi from the Four Horsemen be on the panel, but Mattel in-house toy designers Bill Beneke, Mike GuarniereRuben Martinez and packaging designer Frank Varela will also be there to join in on the fun!

Be sure to get to the panel early to make sure you get a seat, and also feel free to hit Jim and the rest of the panel members with any questions or comments that you have for them, both at the panel and back at the Mattel booth. That’s why they’re there!

Now, about that contest:

If you’re going to make it to WonderCon, find Jim as soon as you’re in the door, because if you get the WonderPhrase right for that day, and you’re the first to get to Jim with the WonderPhrase after the exhibit hall officially opens each day, you’ll win a box of free goodies from the Four Horsemen!

All you have to do is check back at each day before going to WonderCon, and they’ll post a new WonderPhrase of the day that you’ll have to recite to Jim verbatim when you find him. Each WonderPhrase will be posted just after midnight EST right here at, and will be listed under the heading "WONDERPHRASE OF THE DAY" with that day’s date next to it.

Each day’s WonderPhrase will be good ONLY for that day, and once someone’s claimed the prize for that day, it will no longer be viable. You can only win once, so if you win on Friday, then you’re not eligible to win on Saturday and/or Sunday just to make sure that other people get the chance to win.

The WonderPhrase contest is closed to WonderCon exhibitors!

Winners will give their contact info to Jim and the prize packages will be shipped from Four Horsemen Studios warehouse to the winners after WonderCon is over.

Included in each prize pack:  Queen Alluxandra of the Bloodmane Clan, Isadorra of the Ironspynne clan, Swimsuit Edition Queen Alluxandra, a full set of all three Time Keepers, and some surprises! Good luck!!

Daniel Pickett
Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett has been around toys his whole life. The first line he ever collected was Mego’s World’s Greatest Super Heroes line back in the 70s. He has been surrounded by collectables ever since. In 1999 he was confounded by a lack of information and news about some of his favorite toy lines he was collecting. Since he couldn’t find the information he decided to pursue it himself thinking other people might also be interested in the same news. He started writing a weekly column on the toy industry and action figure for a toy news site and in a years time he tripled the sites daily traffic with his updates, reviews and product features. He built relationships with every major toy manufacturer and many sculptors, painters and mold makers. He grew his hobby into a world wide expertise that the industry has embraced. In 2004 he teamed up with his toy buddy Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and they created their own website Daniel has been quoted in both industry and mass media press outlets. Over the years Daniel and AFi have been sought out as experts in the field. Daniel was regularly featured on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 network as the primary contributor to their “Mint On Card” segment, and our front page has been linked to from USA Today’s “Pop Candy” Blog twice. Daniel’s content has also been featured on,,, Boing-Boing,, Ain’t It Cool News, the Official Star Wars blog, Geekologie, G4, CNet and Toy Fare magazine, among many others. He has consulted on toy lines, books, documentaries and TV shows. But all of that really just sounds snooty and “tootin’ his own horn” – the long and short of it is that Daniel loves toys and he LOVES talking about them.
