Mattel guards sales numbers like they’re state secrets, so there’s no way to know whether they’ve increased the number of subscriptions needed this time around or if there has been a drop off in customers, but let’s assume that it is the latter. The DC and Masters of the Universe brands have been around several years now and the most requested figures have been produced. So we’re at the point where fandom becomes fractured and people a less likely to go all in on a subscription even if most of the figures have been revealed. There are MOTU fans that just want the toys of their youth (me), there’s She-Ra fans, New Adventures fans, 200X fans, and yes a fraction that just loves every MOTU piece of merchandise they can afford (Pixel Dan). With DC, well basically there’s fans of every iteration of their reboots. Daniel, you were in the AFI thread where Jh1-whatever-his-handle was threatening to burn the Constantine figure if it was in the sub because it wasn’t part of “his DC” even after people showed off multiple images of Constantine on bronze age covers and testimonials about the great character work done by various artist in the Vertigo line. I have the current DC and MOTU subs and I’ve been very disappointed by Rocket Red (scale and design issues) and the Star Sisters (POP prototypes glimpsed for a minute in one episode) respectively. These were not regular $20-25 offerings, these were both about ~$40 all said and done. But the problem is not increased figure prices. As Poe Ghostal pointed out on his blog* “the total cost of the 2013 [MOTUC] sub (before shipping) is $505, while the total cost of the 2012 sub was $510.” The problem is the subscription based format and the customer is always right. Mattel is going to have to figure out another way to sell action figures.

Serendipitously, you then segwayed into an interview which gives us a glimpse at the future: thousands of toy collectors armed with digital printers and a community forum to share designs. The seeds are already planted. The Justice League Unlimited community grew tired of the industry only Hal Jordans and the seen but never produced figures. So they sculpted them, made casts and sold them to fellow fans at basically cost. In the transformers community, G1 collectors feel neglected by Hasbro who’d rather concentrate on their current iterations of the series. So 3rd party companies came in and have produced some amazing generation 1 figures with modern design. So when these printers come out and someone has a 3D rendering of the basic He-Man buck? The sky is the limit.

I am not sure about others but one of the big reasons why I am not going to do the MOTUC sub this year is Digital River. I got 3 subs for 2012 and I have had nothing but problems with all 3 of them. The customer service stinks and that has made me get to the point where I am only going to get the DCUC sub. I like my MOTUC stuff but in the end I will either get it day of (if it is something i want) or get it from BBTS or eBay.

This episode leaves us wanting more. It almost has the feel of a two parter. Luv Daniel's take on the Matty subscriptions! Could the fella of the Makerbot/Replicator demonstrate his product by creating GSI Bobbleheads? it would really show us how his product works.

Sean Connery making "On His Majesty's Secret Service" probably would have won him the Oscar/Picture of the Year. It's such a shame he didn't make it.

Daniel see Dark Knight Rises! I'm dying to hear your take on it.

I absolutely LOVED iron-on t-shirts as a kid.

We had a store like what you were describing in a strip mall within walking distance of my house growing up and it was a weekly trek just to see what was new on the wall even if we didn't actually buy anything.

Every birthday growing up I got a custom made shirt (which seems so hokey now) celebrating the occasion and it was almost always a point of pride.

Man, I miss those shops.

And yes, I do remember enjoying the smell as well.
