Let's Get Those Tots Some Toys
November 5, 2010

Toys For TotsThe U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program kicked off its 2010 campaign this week. With our nation’s poverty rate at its highest level since 1994, this is as important a time as ever to help deliver holiday cheer to millions of less fortunate children across America. Toys For Tots is one of my personal favorite charities, so I felt compelled to highlight the organization and its mission here.

If we can find anything positive in our slow recovery from this recession, perhaps it is in an opportunity to help others in need. With Big Box chains cutting back on their toy orders the last couple of years, many discount retailers have a great selection of name brand toys for low prices. They always expand their toy departments as the holidays get closer, but they have more to offer than usual this year. We’ve talked about the great Mattel and Hasbro finds for collectors, stuff that’s been purchased for considerably lower than MSRP, but these stores are also a great source for toys that could make all the difference in the world to a child who might otherwise wake up to disappointment Christmas morning. Below is a list of discount retailers where you can find toys like STAR WARS, G.I. JOE, Justice League Unlimited, Barbie, Transformers, Polly Pocket, Spider-Man, and Littlest Pet Shop, along with links to their store locators.

Tuesday Morning

And tonight and tomorrow only, Toys "R" Us is having a buy one, get two free sale on G.I. JOE: The Rise Of Cobra figures and some Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen toys. There are 30%, 40%, and 50% off sales on several other Batman, G.I. JOE, STAR WARS, and Transformers toys, as well. You can drop off toys right there at your local Toys "R" Us and maybe even take advantage of some of those deals for your own collections. And if you’re currently sitting on a Pile of Loot at Big Bad Toy Store, check out their current $5 or Less Sale for even more great deals.

I hope that all of us who buy toys for ourselves throughout the year can take the time and spend at least a few dollars to make a donation to this worthy cause. As we continue to find joy in toys as adults, this is a great chance for us to share some of that joy with children in need.

Jon "Caped Crusader" Edwards
Born in April of '77, Jon quite literally grew up with STAR WARS. His mother took him to see it barely two months later and started buying him the figures before he was even old enough for them. G.I. JOE and Super Powers came along in the '80s, and an action figure addict was created. The moment he decided he was "too old" to play with his toys, he started to collect carded figures, beginning with Super Powers. No longer in possession of the toys or comics of his childhood, he rediscovered collecting with The Phantom Menace, and has moved on from STAR WARS to JLU, DC Direct, G.I. JOE, Marvel Universe, and various characters from movies, television shows, and comics.

For a subset of hobbyists like ourselves, we certainly understand how much toys can add to the life of a child. Appreciate the reminder about this charity, Jon!
