Looking Back: Chewgum Warriors
August 26, 2013

Chewgum Warriors. So that’s what he was called. I had pretty much relegated this guy to an old but vivid memory. But some random interweb search turned up an image that stopped me dead in my tracks. At long last, justice was gonna be served.

You see, when I was around seven years old my mom briefly dated a guy who had two boys of his own. At some point close to Halloween we were all invited over to this fella’s home and my mom wanted to bring his boys a little gift. I don’t know where she bought them but I did remember what she bought them: black action figures with clear torsos that contained Chiclet style chewing gum.

Well, I was a lover of the little plastic people and I was extremely jealous that these two knuckleheads got such an awesome present. I suppose my jealousy could have been mollified in the intervening 33 years had it not been for the fact that one of these lucky kids took his Chewgum Warrior and smashed it on a rock in his backyard. Yeah.

That vision of him committing that unforgivable act has been emblazoned in my mind ever since. Not many memories have that kind of staying power so I must’ve been really upset. Number one: because I didn’t get one of these and, number two: because this kid could obviously care less that he did!

Knowing the toy had to have been some bootleg I had very little to go on in initiating a search. But, like I mentioned at the outset, I stumbled upon a picture of a Chewgum Warrior recently. Armed with the name I hit eBay with vigor! Believe it or not, there was one listed. It was a Buy It Now and it wasn’t cheap. With a patience I’ve only acquired since practicing yoga I waited it out. But not terribly long. I finally caved and bought it. At long last a wrong was righted. At the tune of 30 times what I assume the original price to be.

But really, can you put a price tag on justice?

I always love your blog as I know I can look forward to insight on favorite toys of my youth. You stumped me this time around. Somehow I missed the Chewgum Warriors… now I wish I hadn’t.

  • I fully expect that the follow up to this article will be about you trying the 30+ year old gum… for science!

Great blog. But if I know you, you are gonna hunt for more of them so you can stack them just like the back of the card. :)

I wish more toys today had that awesome “stacking action”….
… and gum in their chests ….

Maybe we should pass this along to the dev teams at Hasbro, Mattel, NECA, etc., and see if we can get a nice “retro” offering of this fantastic find!

Thanks for sharing Dan, this kinda makes me feel like I’m 7 years old, sitting on the monkey bars during school recess, sharing new toy gets after a long weekend.

Lucky is right and that little bum had no appreciation for what your mom did. I REALLY hated those types of kids back then and I’m not all that fond of them today either although it’s a much different perspective as an understanding adult. Man I hope he’s locked up in a prison somewhere today. lol ;)

interesting never heard of chewgum warriors till now . even though they are legit they still look like something you would find in a dollar store or a in vending machines. hope you did not dare eat that thirty year gum in it.
