Back in July during Comic Con 2010 Mattel announced they would be going a supplemental wave of Green Lantern characters in their DC Retro-Action line starting in February of 2011.   I’m not sure if this would be considered wave 5 or wave 3.5 (since we haven’t seen wave 4 show up yet).

At the show we were shown Sinestro Corps Sinestro and Guy Gardner, but I don’t think many of us really put two and two together that it was a full wave of four more characters and they sort of dropped off my radar…. until last week.

That’s when  a sample of John Stewart showed up.  As all of you collectors know it’s really hard to be surprised by a new figure these days.  With all of the ways we learn toy news, official press releases, conventions, ebay leaks, retail list leaks, it’s really hard to be surprised.  So it was really cool to get this in the mail.  According to the card this wave will be: John Stewart, SC Sinestro, Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner.  These will be released, one a month starting in February on MattyCollector.com.  I suspect John will be the first figure out of the gate.

John is a easy win for Mattel as he just needs a new head on the existing Hal Jordan body and costume.  With this line having a retro feel to to it, it makes since to have John in this classic GL costume.   He comes on the improved, tighter joint body that we saw with wave 3 and he comes with a lantern battery.  He stands great and doesn’t do that hunch over that the first two waves did.

I know not everyone is a fan of the Mego/retro revolution that is going on in the industry right now,but this child of the 70′s is loving it.  I was a fan of Mego’s back in the day and I love getting these new characters that were never in the classic line.   I’m hoping for some new waves to be  announced at Toy Fair next month.

You can see the pictures of the Retro-Action John Stewart in his entry in the AFi archive.
