DC Direct showed off their usually huge range of everything DC Comics that could be related to toys and collectibles. And Diamond Select was nearly overwhelming with the giant selection of Star Trek, Stargate, and Battlestar Galactica collectibles!

UPDATED- NECA gallery is now online!

NECA once again has surprised us with their bags of coolness on display this year at Toy Fair. Stuff coming for 2008 includes a 7" Joey Ramone figure, new Cult Classics including Jareth & Hoggle from Labyrinth, Regan from the Exorcist (climbing the stairs backward!), Macheté from Grindhouse (standing on a car), Sam from Trick or Treat (the guy in a burlap sack), Beetlejuice (!), and an Arnold Schwarzeneggar Conan figure (!!!). Other movie related items include a new Stuntman Mike figure and an 8" replica of the "Pussy Wagon" truck from Kill Bill.

Harry Potter continues with the Fred & George Weasley, Lucious Malfoy, Mad-Eye Moody, Harry from the Sorceror’s Stone, and a Richard Harris Dumbledore. Dumbldore’s beard and Malfoy’s hair were cast in a clear white plastic with painted highlights for a very cool effect.

Eastman & Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic versions were shown, along with a painted April O’Neil. A Foot Soldier is in the works, and if all goes well Eastman’s versions of the Turtles will be sculpted, too (Laird’s versions are what’s shown). The famed Four Horsemen did the sculpts and protoyping for the Turtles, with NECA doing the paint in house. One cool thing that is also coming is black & white versions of the turtles, too.

Gears of War will see it’s first toy line, with the first wave including Marcus, Cole, Locust drone, & Locust sniper. One of them has a rad exploding head, dude!

Other big news is that NECA now has a giftware license for DC Comics, kind of like the stuff Monogram has been making. The license incldues the Dark Knight movie. The giftware range is pretty vast- DC head bobbers- Superman, Batman (Neal Adams version!), Wonder Woman, Hal Jordan Green Lantern, engraved wood plaques (logos), pennants, wall scrolls, pin signs, character silhouettes, keychains, salt/pepper shakers, plush logo pillows, 3D nightlites, sculpted wall clocks, alarm clocks, and mugs. Whew!

They’ll be making a giftware range of Sweeney Todd merch, too, including a really nice razor replica. And finally, they’re offering a lawn inflatable Leg Lamp from A Christmas Story to horrify the neighbors with.

 More pics to come!

I know it can be a rare thing to find a significant other that tolerates your hobbies, much less participates in them. I always read with a bit of jealousy the posts from other collectors about their wives or significant others that would hunt for toys for them when they were out on shopping trips and the like. Well, now not only do I know what that is like… I think I’ve got some of you beat!

You see, while I was all the way across the country covering Toy Fair 2008 for AFI, our latest "cub reporter," my girlfriend (whom we shall call "Cubbi") agreed to go to the LA area Dr. Who convention and cover it for AFI! That’s right, you heard me… while I’m out of town she goes to a Dr. Who con armed with her camera and a notebook to file this report for us.

One other point of note, she was also the one that shot and edited our April Fools Mattel commercial, so she’s seen me at my absolute dorkiest and still wanted to hang around with me.

She’s a keeper, eh fellas?

Here I present to you her report on:

The 2008 Gallifrey One Convention

By: Cubbi

It’s Sunday.  I throw on that union jack t-shirt I have been saving for a special occasion.  Comb my long blonde hair, put on “my ass looks amazing in these” jeans, lace up my chucks and look in the mirror.  Nice. I totally look like I could be the next companion.  Wait, I look like Rose.  Okay, KIND of like Rose.  Damn, they aren’t going to want an assistant that resembles a past one.  Reality check Cubbi – you are not auditioning today.

I arrive at Gallifrey One (my very first Doctor Who convention) not having any idea what to expect.  What if David Tennant is there? Not for a panel, but just there walking around in disguise. I tell myself he would totally want to hang out with me. Or, what if they have a life-size dalek? OR…OR…what about a life-size weeping angel statue? Now that would be cool.

The convention is underwhelming considering Comic Con was the last convention I was at.  Where is everybody? I know it’s Sunday, but come on! Where are all the people in costumes? Oh wait! Wait! I see a man in gold metallic spandex bodysuit sitting in a forum. I rack my brain trying to figure out if this was loosely based off a costume from the old Doctor Who.  I don’t think so.  I think it’s just a dude wearing gold spandex.  Snap. I had to take a picture.

I secretly keep hoping David Tennant is around.

All the panels have started so I walk around a bit.  I go into the Dealers Room hoping I can find some of the series one figures for cheap.  Instead I find a load of books (who knew there were so many books on Doctor Who?! This is cool!), DVD’s, some “Renfaire-esque” type jewelry (for the fellas to bring home to their ladies), and Bob May.  Yes, Bob May the Robot from Lost in Space.  I walk by his table and he flags me down and starts chatting me up.  Asking me where I am from, how I like the show, you know the usual banter.  I can’t tell if he’s going to give me sales pitch or ask me to meet him for a cocktail in the hotel lounge.  I’d pick the cocktails.

After thinking that fans had seen nearly everything that would be offered this year in DCUC, and with JLU not being shown due to its new status as a Target exclusive, Mattel came straight out of left field with a brand new DC Comics based line: Infinite Heroes! This amazing looking toy line will have both 3-packs and single figures, and will not only include a jaw droppingly huge character range but also include civilian figures such as Commissioner Gordon and the Gotham Police!

So far the line-up looks to include: Batman, Killer Croc, Batwoman, Reverse Flash, Shazam!, Wildcat, Black Hand, Hush, The Question, Power Girl, Jay Garrick Flash, Weather Wizard, Hawkman, Black Adam, Thanagerian Cops,Commissioner Gordon, GCPD Cops, Supergirl, Wonder Girl, Bizarro, Black Canary, Hal Jordan and Green Arrow, Mirror Master, and Wally West Flash. The three packs look to be themed.

More info as we get it. Go check out the pics here, along with shots of the DCUC wave 4: Cyborg and Wonder Woman!

No pictures yet, but Diamond has a new line of incredible 18" figures from Star Wars and Indiana Jones! The likenesses look to be the best we’ve seen yet for these characters. Shown in their showroom are Ben Kenobi for Star Wars: A New Hope (comes with lightsaber and jedi training remote), Han Solo in Hoth gear (come with blaster, binoculars, lifeform scanner), Darth Maul (comes with double-bladed lightsaber, binoculars , sith remote on stand), And Indiana Jones (comes with whip, hat, gun, idol, etc).

Again, just fantastic likenesses on these guys. Pics to come!

Our intrepid Julius Marx has called in with a bit of news for Dr. Who fans (if this sounds off, it’s because I don’t know a thing about Dr. Who and wrote it down wrong!):

Torchwood is getting its own figures- they will be 7" scale unfortunately, but will include Jack, some of the monsters (including Weevil). The rest of team will not be in the first wave.

There are no classic Dr. Who figures shown yet at Toy Fair this year; Underground was not allowed to display them, but more are coming. First wave will incldue the 4th, 5th, and 6th Doctors. And the Rose/ Chip 2-pack will be rereleased for those who missed out the first time.

Dr. Who Mini=Mates were shown, including the  9th & 10th Doctors, Martha, Cyberman, Cyber controller. Dr Who Jack (10th Dr.) will have two versions.

Underground also has the license to do Transformers usb hubs, such as Optimus Prime’s head and that cube thing everyone wants.

More to come!
