Mattel has provided us with carded images of the new  heroes in The Batman line.

Shipping right now to stores are Green Lantern and Hawkman.  These were mostly found at Targets and Wal-Marts around the holidays.

And coming right behind them are The Flash, Martian Manhunter and Superman.  We were told these were coming at Comic Con last year, and much to everyone’s surprise they popped up on Ebay last week before anyone had seen official pictures.  The auction pictures are small and hard to see, so we got better pictures from Mattel.

Iconic Toy Makers 60th Year Of Engaging Americas Young And Old With A Yearlong Celebration That Includes Online Commercial Contests, Special 60th Anniversary Products And A Search For The Next Great Kid Toy Inventor

EMERYVILLE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–WHAM-O, Inc., the originator of innovative outdoor fun, is marking its 60th year of engaging kids of all ages with toys that spark the imagination through free-spirited play with a yearlong salute to the iconic companys legendary and sometimes zany history. WHAM-Os 2008 celebration plans include a 60th Anniversary Kid Inventor Contest, An Original Fun Commercial Contest, Nationwide Radio Promotions, Traveling Team WHAM-O Media Tour and will commemorate the anniversary with its iconic product line-up that includes the Hula Hoop®, Slip N Slide® Mega Shark, Frisbee® Pro Classic with U-Flex, SuperBall® and Hacky Sack® Striker.

In 1948, childhood friends and University of Southern California college students Arthur Spud Melin and Richard Knerr, founded WHAM-O as a leading designer/distributor of innovative, high-quality recreational activity products. WHAM-O initially set up shop in Knerrs parents garage and introduced the Slingshot®, the original product from which the company derived its name, based on the comic book sound of a target being hit. With toys that range from zany to basic, WHAM-O has since provided endless hours of affordable, interactive amusement for all ages and skill levels.

For over 60 years, WHAM-O’s iconic brands have given consumers innovation, quality, value, and fun, and have built WHAM-O into the globally successful, year-round seasonal products company that it is today. From off-the-wall novelty items to classic toys and sporting goods, WHAM-O’s products have sparked imaginations, engaged people with active fun, and brought endless enjoyment to backyards, beaches, parks, and playrooms the world over, said Mojde Esfandiari, WHAM-O’s president and CEO. Our creative team is as bright and imaginative as our celebrated products, which have come to define summertime fun and have inspired people of all ages to get outside and enjoy life for more than 60 years."

In acknowledgment of that 60-year history, WHAM-O will celebrate its iconic toy culture with two interactive contests designed to celebrate the colorful past and engage WHAM-O enthusiasts of the future. Because Melin and Knerr frequently experimented with toys in fun, wacky ways and were open to original and sometimes odd ideas, WHAMO will entice its loyal fan base of creative, innovative boys and girls to tinker, test and create the next great WHAM-O toy through a 60th Anniversary Kid inventor contest. Kids will be asked to submit their toy inventions for the opportunity to have their invention marketed and sold as the next great toy from WHAM-O.

Mattel has given us the exclusive first look at the Wave III Variants for their new DC Universe Classics line.   Fans will now have the opportunity to get Deathstroke aka Slade Wilson unmasked and Sinestro in his recent SINESTRO CORPS uniform.  The gang over at Toy Fare broke the first pictures of this wave, and now we know who and what to look for with the variants on the new super-hot line sculpted by the Four Horsemen.

These will be chase versions of the regular figures, not even packed like the planned Superman Red/Blue split.

Here’s a great idea made better.  We all remember the old Rock’em Sock’em Robots (by Marx!) and spent many an afternoon pummeling our opponent.  But what if you could open that "arena" up and REALLY get to some robot bashing?!?!

That’s the idea behind Johnny Lightnings new BATTLE WHEELS. These are collectible remote controlled, fighting robots and as you’ll see from the video below they are a ton of fun and really draw a crowd.

After trying these out I think my new rule in 2008 at the AFI offices and at work that ALL disputes will be settled by Battle Wheels!  May the best ‘bot win!!

The press kit on these is an amazing idea and more companies should take note.   Getting one of these was fun, but to really get the full flavor of them you need at least two of them so they can FIGHT!

Here’s some more info on Battle Wheels:

·       Each Battle Wheel warrior comes with five removable pieces of armor, two weapons, a controller, and a cardboard training dummy

·       The fully articulated warriors can be strategically positioned for attack or defense depending on the style of combat chosen

·       Five removable pieces of armor (2 shoulder pads, 2 wheel blades and a shield), as well as the individual character’s battle weapons, accompany each warrior  into battle

·       Fallen armor wreckage is left strewn around the battlefield at the end of a match

·       Body armor and weapons can be interchanged between Battle Wheel warriors to outfit the ultimate champion

·       Play one-on-one, or as a team with the multiband feature allowing up to six warriors to battle at the same time.

How ROUND 2 Saved Christmas!

As many of you know I was a HUGE fan of Playing Mantis’ holiday "Memory Lane" lines of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Peanuts lines back in the day. As a result theirs was always one of my favorite showrooms to visit each year at Toy Fair, not just to see the new product, but for the elaborate displays they would build each year. A few years back Playing Mantis was sold to RC2/Ertl and the lines lasted a year past that, but eventually .

I own just about everything Playing Mantis put out in the 5"-6" lines of Rudolph, Peanuts, and the K-Mart exclusive "Santa Clause is Coming to Town lines. These ARE my Christmas decorations every year.

I was surprised to walk into a CVS Pharmacy this October and see some "Great Pumpkin" product from a new company called "Round 2, Corp." I wrote down the web address from the back of the package and looked it up that night and was delighted to see the rebirth of lines like Peanuts and Rudolph with new product and refreshed product with new accessories and features under their "Forever Fun" banner. But that wasn’t all! There was a NEW line based on one of the Frosty the Snowman holiday specials.

My holidays were shapeing up with this news, but I needed to know more! What was coming? Who was this mysterious new company? What’s next?

I contacted Bob Plant, Creative Director of Round 2 Corp to get the straight scoop on who they are, what they are doing and what’s next from Round 2.
