It reminded me of Peter Davison’s regeneration, except that David Tennant was given a longer send-off as a farewell nod to the fans. Both Doctors willingly sacrificed themselves for someone else. Both were given highly emotional endings. And just like Davison’s transformation into Colin Baker, Matt Smith appears to be mentally unbalanced right from that first scene. Going by the previews it seems like he’s going to be more of an action-oriented Doctor than most of his predecessors.

Love him or not, David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor certainly left his mark on the series. He’ll be a tough act to follow.
