Mattel NYCC – Blown Away!
February 9, 2009

Never.  Never did I expect to see these in plastic.  No way.  That is why their inclusion in the slide show during Mattel’s presentation on Saturday blew me away.  I’ve been a big fan of this line since it began, but this, this just shows me how much they get it.

I worked to get Capt Atom and Question in the line.  Batman Beyond, Old Bruce, and Warhawk I’d asked for and they came.  Cheetah with new legs.  Expanding the line to Ultra Man and Super Woman.  Atomic Skull and Shadow Thief.  Vibe and Deadman.  But this was so unexpected.  So far from the expected that I am re evaluating all my complaints about character packout in JLU.  I was bummed that Capt Atom, Question, and Galetea all came with two existing characters.  Bummed again that Blackhawk would require me to do it again.  But if you average it out, if you balance them, thinking about 3 packs with 3 new characters, like the Batman Beyond set, I think it might come out that we are getting an average of 2 new for each existing.  In any event, 3 packs such as this to offset 3 packs with just one new character.  So much that I am going to go buy one of those Galetea packs the next time I go out.  Mr. Miracle, Cyborg, & Plastic Man is a tribute to wave 3 of the Super Powers line, but this one was even better.  When these were announced, I almost could not believe it.  The applause were instantaneous.

Black Vulcan, Samurai, and Apache Chief.

For an old fan of the Super-Friends, there was no better gift Mattel could have given me, this was just awesome.

Erik "Superfriend" Skov
"Gathered together from the four corners of the universe." Oh, wait, that's the show, not me. Erik "SuperFriend" Skov never actually got to appear on the show, although he did watch it every week. Erik spent 6 years working for Hasbro in Pawtucket, RI before leaving for a job that paid more (Why else would a collector leave the company that was making Star Wars, Transformers, and while I was there Batman). I used to post all over the net. These days I tend to hang my hat at AFI.

Hear hear!!! I’m with ya, bud!

    Awesome stuff.

  • Thatman says:

I was at the panel, and I don’t think I could have been more floored by that announcement. Very cool announcements, both for JLU and DCUC.

Of course, now I’m really going to want Wonder Twins in my JLU set!

  • texgnome1 says:

I am thrilled they’re making them, and will be buying them I know. I really hope they don’t stop there – I’d love to see them add El Dorado, Rima, and the Wonder Twins. Woo hoo!

  • Andy says:

NYCC was a real coup this time around and i’m so happy for JLU/DCUC/DCIH collectors. The characters being released really show that Mattel is doing their absolute best to give everyone what they really want.
Even DC Direct had the strongest showing of new products that i have seen in quite some time although what i hoped and prayed to see was a JSA Series 2 but alas it wasn’t to be.
Huge year ahead for us DC fans!!!

  • Darren says:

So awesome. Guaranteed appeal to multiple fronts (and especially folks like me who have both complete JLU and super powers collections) – any word on if they will be doing the ultimen from JLU? Would love to have an army of those guys too! 🙂

  • Scott Rogers Scott Rogers says:

Never been a fan of the “fake” Super Friends characters (always would have preferred Black Lightning, Red Tornado and… uh… Colossal Boy? to these “we’re here ’cause everyone else is white” versions on the show) but as a fan of the Super Friends, I appreciate them none-the-less.

  • Jason says:

The ultimen would definitley be a great addition. I’m too young to have ever seen Super Friends, so my appreciation of the new figures is not as high. Personally, I would have liked more Batman the Animated Series figures. A Clayface, or Firefly would have been very nice.

I seriously get goosebumps when I think of how the crowd must have been when these were announced. I couldn’t be happier with JLU!

  • The Tekwych says:

HELLO PEOPLE!!!! How are you all missing the one true toy grail announced by Mattel this weekend –

The LEGION OF SUPER HEROS Founding trio.

Lighting Lad, Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl, along with Brainiac 5 are just the start. 31 other members should allow Mattel to stretch the JLU line well into 2010!

On the DCIH line – We wave Wonder Woman’s body and Hawkman’s Wings – Can any one say Dawnstar

  • SpaceMonkeyMikey says:

    SO awesome.

I just hope I have an easier time FINDING them then the last wave.

  • Quinn says:

I’m very excited about these too–I played Apache Chief on the playground as much as I played Green Lantern or Batman. Very cool designs–I’m glad they’ll be part of JLU. Sweet!

  • fallen eldor says:

I think that El Dorado should have accompanied the this trio on…This three pack will only sell to people over the age of 27…LOSH should have been a three pack, kids know who they are from the show that was just recently on.

I was wondering why Cyborg would be packed with Plastic Man, and another Mister Miracle reissue…I don’t know why I didn’t see the Super Power connection.

  • kevfett says:

I love the Superfriends 3-pack but how long until the masses start whining for a 10″ Apache Chief?

  • Darrell says:

When I saw those photos I, too, was floored. Superfriends was pretty much singlehandedly responsible for my love of superheroes, comics and action figures. Okay, Spider-Man and his Amazing friends got me into the X-Men, but it was Superfriends that got me into the genre.
I am excited to see them, and hope to whatever higher power is out there that I get ahold of these figures.
BUT Gypsy continues to be my Holy Grail for this line. As far as I can tell, she is the only JLA’er that has been pictured on the show but not rendered in plastic. If Mattel does indeed get her into production, I’ll never ask for another thing from them.
    Well,except for a DCUC version … 😀

  • Darrell says:

Oh, but El Dorado and Rima would be very, very sweet, too.
I would love to see the Justice League Unlimited versions of the Hanna-Barbera characters – Wind Dragon, Long Shadow, Shifter and the other “wonder twin” who’s name escapes me, and the Black Vulcan homage. They would be pretty cool to have as well.

  • Bat Lantern says:

Super Friends versions of Barry Allen and Hal Jordan can’t be too far behind.. ;P
