Mattel’s March 2014 Club Eternia subscription figure – MOTUC Hydron
March 16, 2014

Mattel’s March 2014 Club Eternia subscription figure is Hydron from ‘New Adventures.’

He’s ready to dive into the most challenging situations on land, under water, or in space. This New Adventures hero comes with his vintage trident, removable air tanks and removable head dome for underwater battles. Complete your Galactic Protectors collection with this captain of the cosmos!

Hydron is a character from the New Adventures of He-Man animated series as we as the toy line based on that series.   Hydron is the leader of the Galactic Protectors and hauls from the planet Primus.   In the pilot episode we see Hydron, along with Flip Shot (now Icarius) leave their universe and travel back in time to search for He-man to help them fight the newly arrived Skeletor and his minions.

Hydron ads a bit more color to our shelves with his light blue and yellow color scheme.  He’s a spaceship captain that comes from an island so he’s also a diver that loves to wear full scuba gear all the time.   It’s no goofier than a fire-fighter with a big robot elephant head I guess.    Hydron has quite a few new parts including his flipper feet, shins, one thigh, forearms/gauntlets and head in addition to his over torso piece.

In his bio they refer to his real name as: Daniel Ripper Jr. (will we ever get DR Sr?) but I think he should have been named Fin.  Look at all the fins on this guy!  On his gloves, his shins, even on his hat (which wouldn’t help him be any more aqua-dynamic in the water with a helmet on over it.

His helmet, hoses and scuba tank are all removable.

Hydron also come with his trident gun.

The hose attachment on the front where it connects to the helmet seems a bit high when compared to the vintage figure, but I’ve seen some folks correct that already by sort of wedging it down into those two ridges in the front of his costume.

But at long last our trio of heroes are united and Icarus gets his best friend to hang out with again.

Daniel Pickett
Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett has been around toys his whole life. The first line he ever collected was Mego’s World’s Greatest Super Heroes line back in the 70s. He has been surrounded by collectables ever since. In 1999 he was confounded by a lack of information and news about some of his favorite toy lines he was collecting. Since he couldn’t find the information he decided to pursue it himself thinking other people might also be interested in the same news. He started writing a weekly column on the toy industry and action figure for a toy news site and in a years time he tripled the sites daily traffic with his updates, reviews and product features. He built relationships with every major toy manufacturer and many sculptors, painters and mold makers. He grew his hobby into a world wide expertise that the industry has embraced. In 2004 he teamed up with his toy buddy Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and they created their own website Daniel has been quoted in both industry and mass media press outlets. Over the years Daniel and AFi have been sought out as experts in the field. Daniel was regularly featured on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 network as the primary contributor to their “Mint On Card” segment, and our front page has been linked to from USA Today’s “Pop Candy” Blog twice. Daniel’s content has also been featured on,,, Boing-Boing,, Ain’t It Cool News, the Official Star Wars blog, Geekologie, G4, CNet and Toy Fare magazine, among many others. He has consulted on toy lines, books, documentaries and TV shows. But all of that really just sounds snooty and “tootin’ his own horn” – the long and short of it is that Daniel loves toys and he LOVES talking about them.
