New Images of Star Wars Black Wave 3
October 30, 2013

Hasbro is calling this Star Wars Black 2014 Wave 1, but I’m old school, so I’m calling it wave 3.   They just sent over pictures of this wave loose and in package:

Wave 3 features:

Episode II: Attack of the Clones – Obi-Wan Kenobi

Episode IV: A New Hope – Stormtrooper

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back – Luke Skywalker (Bespin Fatigues)

Daniel Pickett
Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett has been around toys his whole life. The first line he ever collected was Mego’s World’s Greatest Super Heroes line back in the 70s. He has been surrounded by collectables ever since. In 1999 he was confounded by a lack of information and news about some of his favorite toy lines he was collecting. Since he couldn’t find the information he decided to pursue it himself thinking other people might also be interested in the same news. He started writing a weekly column on the toy industry and action figure for a toy news site and in a years time he tripled the sites daily traffic with his updates, reviews and product features. He built relationships with every major toy manufacturer and many sculptors, painters and mold makers. He grew his hobby into a world wide expertise that the industry has embraced. In 2004 he teamed up with his toy buddy Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and they created their own website Daniel has been quoted in both industry and mass media press outlets. Over the years Daniel and AFi have been sought out as experts in the field. Daniel was regularly featured on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 network as the primary contributor to their “Mint On Card” segment, and our front page has been linked to from USA Today’s “Pop Candy” Blog twice. Daniel’s content has also been featured on,, The Wall Street Journal, The Saturday Evening Post,,,, Boing-Boing,, Ain’t It Cool News, the Official Star Wars blog, Geekologie, G4, CNet and Toy Fare magazine, among many others. He has consulted on toy lines, books, documentaries and TV shows. But all of that really just sounds snooty and “tootin’ his own horn” – the long and short of it is that Daniel loves toys and he LOVES talking about them.

Well, that Bespin Luke Skywalked certainly looks like dog poop in comparisoon to the promotional prototype shots we saw. I know there’s always a difference, but MAN, that’s a BIG difference.

What’s sad is that the face sculpts are good, it’s the lack on paint that kills them. Oh, and wasting another slot on a prequel character…don’t mind them hitting the prequels eventually but can we get the principal characters first? Before retailers stop ordering this line?

  • GeekSummit says:

Is it just me or do these lack any of the warmth/life of the figures in wave 1… 2 of which have no face and one of which is wearing demon face paint…

I just hope at least the eyes get better treatment once these make final production. They really make the figure at this scale. You can do a lot else sloppy but the eyes really betray the overall quality.

Kind of funny how Hasbro keeps remaking Darth Vader on a yearly basis, but we are three waves into this new format of figures, and no Vader yet! Having a Bespin Luke really makes that a necessity! Maybe it means he’s on the way. If I were Hasbro, I would keep a heavy focus on the first film, (like 3 out of 4) until the first versions of the core characters were made! That way if the line dies out….but there I go thinking logically, which isn’t how toy production ever works!

They look great but for the awful paintwork. Getting damn stingey with the accessories too, Obi should have the cloak at the barest minimum, like Maul. A Grevious blaster would have been nice too.
Might be losing interest in these already, especially after seeing slave Leia.
