Hasbro Gets Five-Year License to Marvel Characters; Marvel to Get $205 Million
NEW YORK (AP) -- Hasbro Inc. said Monday it has agreed to a five-year licensing deal with Marvel Enterprises Inc. that gives the toy maker rights to sell games and toys based on Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Captain America and other "Super Hero" characters owned by Marvel.
The deal gives Hasbro rights to make and sell action figures, role play and preschool toys, board games and puzzles for more than 5,000 characters owned by Marvel starting in January next year.
Under the license, Hasbro will pay Marvel an upfront payment of $100 million, followed by $70 million on the movie release of "Spider-Man 3," and another $35 million on the release of "Spider-Man 4."
In a separate statement, Marvel said it ended an existing license with Toy Biz Worldwide Ltd. effective Dec. 31, 2005, one year ahead of schedule, giving it full control over toys formerly produced by Toy Biz.
Regaining control over its toys would allow for a smoother transition to Hasbro in toy development, manufacturing, shipping, and selling, Marvel said.
Hasbro's first line of Marvel-licensed products is expected to center on Ghost Rider and the "Spider-Man 3" movie, which is slated for release in May 2007.
Both companies said the license may be extended past the five-year term, based on the number of other entertainment properties released during the license's timeframe.
Marvel said the payments it will receive from Hasbro will be "generally lower" than payments it had received from Toy Biz, but added Hasbro's strengths in marketing and distribution would boost toy sales. The company also said it would record a charge between $13 million to $16 million in the just-completed fourth quarter for early termination of the Toy Biz deal.
Marvel shares added 33 cents, or 2 percent, to $17.02 on the New York Stock Exchange, while those of Hasbro rose 77 cents, or 3.9 percent, to $20.76.
Shocker Toys acquires licensing rights for GWAR!
Buffalo, NY. – Shocker Toys announces they have acquired the rights to produce GWAR action figures in Shockini form and 6-8 inch fully sculpted figures. GWAR has been the most horrifying band since it's inception in the 80's, the present and ongoing. Oderus Urungus, Flattus Maximus, Beefcake the Mighty, Jizmak Da Gusha and Balsac the Jaws of Death will be featured in the set based off of their GWAR characters.
Under a license from GWAR, the GWAR action figures will retail for around $15 and will be available at specialty stores and mass retailers in Summer of 2006. Each figure will come with plenty of murderous accessories and a GWAR comic book for a little reading after dark! Also to be produced will be Shockini versions of GWAR shrunk down into 3 inch block figures they will kick the block figure world square in the blocks!

The figures, limited to only 500 sets of Lt. Starbuck and Captain Apollo, are based on the “Experiment in Terra” episode in which the two popular characters are enlisted by the “light of truth and good” that radiates from the “Ship of Lights” to save planet Terra from global destruction.
In this episode, the characters’ uniforms and accessories, from their Viper helmets down to their boots, miraculously turn white when in the presence of this protecting white aura. The figures in the boxed set will display an amazing attention to detail with each uniform, including guns and gear reproduced in pure white.
The deluxe packaging features an embossed white on white flapped window box in a clear acetate sleeve. The sets are individually numbered and come with a ‘Certificate of Authenticity’ personally autographed by actor Richard Hatch, who portrayed the lead central character, Captain Apollo.

Marvel Line to Show Classic Super Heroes' Development Over Time
HONG KONG --(Business Wire)-- Sept. 26, 2005 Corgi USA (Nasdaq:ZNDT), the leading brand in the die-cast scale model collectible market, has acquired a license from Marvel Entertainment, Inc. to produce limited quantity, high end metal figurines of some of the hottest characters in the comic book world.
Initial products in the Marvel line, to be introduced at the American International Toy Fair in February, 2006, will include Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk and Thor, as well as other heroes and villains made famous in Marvel comics.
Unlike the resin-only figures of these characters currently on the market, Corgi's 1/12th scale (approx. 6 in.) metal figures will be
designed to stand the test of time. Produced in very limited quantities, these highly detailed metal miniatures will encourage consumers to collect the complete line.
Each Marvel character will be sculpted in 3D. Alter ego figures and adversarial characters will allow collectors to build a comprehensive collection.

The MEGO Museum Relaunch!
Dec 15, 2005: The Mego Museum, the world’s leading online authority on action figures produced by the long-defunct Mego toys corporation, unveiled today the beginning of a a complete redesign that will eventually encompass the entire website.
The new Mego Museum features an innovative new look and feel, featuring newly designed galleries by the site’s original creator, Scott C. Adams.

Filmmaker Creates Award-Winning Games to Fund Movie
Innovative board games will help launch new movie
(Santa Monica, CA) - Dec 12, 2005 - When filmmaker Allen Wolf needed to raise financing for his new motion picture he took a unique approach – he created games. “I realized I needed a successful company of my own so I could be my own investor,” Wolf said.
After this realization last year, Wolf created four award-winning games which are now being distributed throughout the US, Canada, the United Kingdom and the Philippines. The profits from his game company will help fund Wolf’s first feature “In My Sleep” which he plans to direct in 2006.
Wolf got the idea for his first game last year when a close friend wanted a way to get to get to know his girlfriend better. Wolf stepped in to lend a hand and created “You’re Pulling My Leg!” to help them get better acquainted. They loved the game and months later the couple decided to tie the knot. The game went on to win multiple awards last year and sell out last Christmas in toy and game stores across the U.S.
Wolf knew he would need a variety of games to create enough profits to help his filmmaking dream become reality. So this year he created three new games which have garnered awards and praise. – “You’re Pulling My Leg! Junior,” “Pet Detectives” and “JabberJot.” The games are packaged in trendy tin lunchboxes and Wolf has a message on the back of each game which explains why he created it. Each message is signed “Allen Wolf – Filmmaker.”
If game sales continue to be successful, Wolf looks to roll cameras for “In My Sleep” by summer of 2006. The movie will be produced by Wolf and Ralph Winter, the prolific producer of many blockbusters including “Fantastic Four” and the upcoming “XMen 3.” It stars Philip Winchester (Flyboys) and co-stars Stephen Baldwin and Tony Hale (Arrested Development).
“I set out to create games that are engaging and fun and reflect my sensibilities as a filmmaker” Wolf explains. Critics are agreeing. Morning Star Games has won multiple awards including the Toy of the Year Award from Creative Child Magazine, The National Parenting Center’s Seal of Approval, iParenting Media Award and 100 Best Children’s Products of 2005 by Dr. Toy, among others.
Wolf graduated from New York University’s film school and his senior thesis film, “Harlem Grace” was a finalist for the Student Academy Awards. It went on to win multiple awards and is now being distributed internationally.
After “In My Sleep” is filmed, Wolf will continue to create new games while directing his movies.

Custom of the Year returns for its second year.
Nearly 3000 votes were cast last year as awards look towards growth.
www.customoftheyear.com (Dec. 5, 2005). The Custom of the Year (COTY) awards is returning for another year to the toy and customizing community. After nearly 3000 votes were casts in a number of categories, there have been several changes in the types of awards and how one can enter. Categories included this year run the gamut of Best Sculpture, Best Website, Best Marvel, and, of course, Custom of the Year. While some categories have been tweaked or done away all together, three judges from last year’s process.
“I’m glad to welcome back H. Eric 'Cornboy' Mayse of Four Horsemen Studios, Daniel "Julius Marx" Pickett of Action Figure Insider, and Michael Crawford of Michael's Review of the Week,” said COTY Founder Tommy Sanchez. Two new judges are expected to be announced shortly.
The timeline for this year has been extended to allow more time for customizers to work on projects and for the COTY staff to process entries. Entries will be accepted from January 1st- 31st, 2006 and the judges nominations will be made public on March 15th. Voting will end by the public on March 24th and winners announced and posted on March 27th.
