So longtime readers will know that there is no love lost between me and Shocker Toys President Geoff Beckett. I’ve never been a fan of the company or the guy running it, and my occasional harsh reviews of their product has been met by attacks and legal threats. I preface this post with the above to try and ward off any accusations of for some reason being a company shill.
Because I talked to Geoff Beckett at NYCC last week, and saw the product that he had brought with him. Hold on to your hats: it wasn’t bad. In fact, it was quite nice! Now, he did not have the full line-up of Indie Spotlight series 1 there, nor did I see any packaged samples, or even any painted samples. I can’t judge any of that stuff (I have seen pics that show he did have some test shots there later in the show, but when I was there they weren’t out).
What he did have were the NYCC Exclusive versions of "Smoky Maxx and Smoky Scud". I was able to play with both figures fairly extensively while I talked with Geoff, and I was quite impressed with what I held in my hands. The construction is solid, the joints are nice- not too loose, not too tight. Neither one felt in the least bit breakable, and were able to hold many more poses than I thought possible just looking at the pics of them. The sculpting is polished and not the usual unfinished stuff we’ve been seeing, and both figures looked as on-model as I could expect, not being a fan of either property. But definitely as on-model as anything I’ve seen from Hasbro or Mattel. And the Maxx felt a lot tougher than any recent product I’ve seen from either of those companies. And he’s HUGE! Like I said, I’m not a fan…but I might pick up one or two of these if the final product is as nice as what I saw. And if Dick Tracy and the Phantom are equally nice I will definitely pick them up.
So that’s the figures. The harder thing to judge is that company itself. I had a long talk with Geoff, and while our previous conversations at cons have always been cordial, I was pleasantly surprised at how pleasant our talk was! Geoff was very contrite about his past behavior, and just in talking with him face to face it was hard not to believe that he truly understands how much of a problem his behavior has been for his company. There were no excuse, no justifications, just a remarkable humbleness and he was very apologetic about letting himself go overboard online. Seriously; I would never have known this guy was the same guy who runs rampant on the message boards.
But that’s also the big hurdle Geoff needs to clear these days. And he very much knows that. I’m as surprised as anyone that I left his booth wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt. But as he also knows, the only thing that can possible redeem Shocker Toys now is getting the toys on shelves AND having those toys be stellar, not just good. So here’s what he told me about that: They are just now shipping to distribution centers. When they show up in stores depends on the stores, but the target is later March/Early April. Product was delayed getting in (not sure if anything else is being show at Toy Fair, but very little was at NYCC) and they are/were taking preorders for the NYCC exclusives (show in the pics here) shipping out for delivery in late March.
Where will you be able to find the mass market toys? Good question. Diamond is no longer their distributor, but they have 2 smaller ones signed up. They will be available to comic shops and the Hastings chain, and are in talks with larger stores. Toys R Us is still interested, Geoff said, but new deals need to be made. Shocker also had their version of "Mighty Muggs" on display at NYCC, with licensed versions possible if the concept is sold. These were similar, but more articulated that MM and a bit smaller.
For something so ambitious I can at least say what I saw is much better than all the Indy toys that flooded comic shops in the late ’90s. But who knows if it’s too little, too late or just the tip of the iceberg. My final advice to Geoff was to stay offline altogether, so we’ll see just how far that advice goes. But if I got anything wrong in the article, feel free to correct it in the comments, Geoff. My memory only goes so far these days. Will these ever actually get it stores? Will people be able to easily buy them some day in the near future? I have no idea. And to be honest, I’m not holding my breath. But if they do get out there I think others like me who might have dismissed them out of hand might be pleasantly surprised.
So that’s that. Only time will tell what happens with the long running Shocker saga, but after so many missteps the real "shocker" will be if the final product actually turns out to be everything Geoff has said it would be, and more.
Nice writeup, Otter. I too am (more or less) rooting for Shocker, because I want to see these toys on shelves. It really is inexcusable that they have taken so long to get these made and released. I mean, how do you not even have the NYCC exclusive ready for NYCC? But I take no delight in their failure, unlike some people around the net.
I’m a HUGE fan of Madballs, so for once I’m actually hoping Shocker gets those new “Shocker Muggs” to the shelves.
I’m not holding my breath though
I’m not holding my breath either, but I am hopeing that IF the toys actually come out!I promise to by two of each figure and make this line a succes so I can FINALLY have a Dick tracy, the Tick and GOD WILLING, THE PHANTOM!

Wow.
Good to hear. Based on his past behavior I was prepared to totally skip their products (assuming they actually get released.)
But I was tempted by Scud, Dick Tracy and the Phantom…
And hey, if the Otter is gonna give him the benefit of the doubt, how can I not do the same!
Spy
I’m not necessarily rooting for Shocker. I’m just not rooting against him. I’m pretty much neutral at this point. I do think it would be a shame for some of these characters to not get their one shot at toy shelves. Because Shocker probably is their only shot to get made.
I also forgot to mention that Geoff said that all creators are getting a licensing fee and royalties (I think he said 15%). According to him, Terry Moore misspoke or meant something else. I do find it hard to believe that anyone (let alone MTV, which controls the Maxx) would give away a license for free.
$30 for translucent versions of the characters? Seriously?
I suppose if you really want these toys you might as well buy the translucent ones and paint them because that’s probably as close as you’ll ever get to the final product.
I’d like to have a few of these toys, but I have no idea how anyone can take anything these guys say with a grain of salt.
So the NYCC “exclusives” that were going to be out on March 2nd, have now been pushed back to late March/Early April? I believe you had to sign a piece of paper for your pre-order that claimed it would be shipped March 2nd, what happened now? How can they call these NYCC exclusives when they weren’t available at the con, and can be purchased by anyone. Not only that but they had other merch for sale that were “exclusives” at previous cons. Now the shipping date for the exclusives as well as the main line has been pushed back AGAIN?
So, what exactly is it that is different about Shocker Toys this time?
And yes, since Geoff threatened me, I enjoy his failures.
Shocker Toys has a link to their website on youbentmywookie.com. The banner clearly states “SHIPPING NOW.” If the toys are not in Geoff Beckett’s hands currently, this is clearly a deceptive and false bit of advertising to lure the ignorant into paying for items that will not ship until a later date… if at all.
Pariah, my memory may be faulty on that date, I know he told me one date for exclusives, and another (later) one for the regular line.
What is different about them this time is that the actual product isn’t total crap. I can’t vouch for anything else, but I’m also not going to deny that the product I saw is much better than the protos.
I do wonder if these will sell at all even if they make it to stores. 4 years ago they would have been a decent bet, but in today’s market it’s a real hard sell.
How many delays does this make? Can’t wait til “Early April” when Geoff pushes the date back yet again.
I remember when these were originally suppose to come out in Dec 2008! But for tooling or whatever reason they got delayed.
The pictures of the “final” figures all look great to me, and because I haven’t really been following the Geoff saga I could care less if he’s rubbed people the wrong way. I mean, he’s been attacked constantly left and right for showing roughs and protos that normally other companies hide. So I won’t blame him. Plus, I met him at SDCC 08 and I thought he was a pretty nice and definately passionate about what he’s doing. So here’s to hoping these come out soon and turn out amazing.
To be honest, the only reason I want this series to succed is so they might make a proper JUDGE DREDD FIGURE! reuseing a LONG-SHOT body and just makeing a new head, hands & boots, is pretty lame.
Hey Sam, don’t you like the 2000 AD Dredd? I never bothered with the LCBH one because that one filled my Dredd need.
Hey! Hellpop, I do have the 2000 A.D. DREDD figuer it’s THE only TRUE DREDD figure we Dreddheads have ever gotton, Unfortunately that was nearly a DECADE ago! I would REALLY love to get a NEW one with better comic accurate sculpt & 30 points of articulation!;) And as far as I know the 2000 ad line never had DREDDS LAWMASTER!
The only thing that can redeem Geoff and his company in my eyes is a huge public apology and a complete 180 deg turn in attitude. Anyone can make mistakes and everyone should have the chance to be forgiven if they realize them.
However simply not hearing from Geoff and his absence from the forums in which he so regularly trolled isn’t enough. He acted that way in public so he should apologize in the same manner.
These figures can be excellent, they might even be spectacular and Shocker could be on their way to becoming the next Hasbro for all we know. But tho we collectors never forget…we do forgive.
you should be the last person to speak jin.
Jin, shut the hell up and stop trolling /toy/
Fwoosh will always give Shocker Toys poor grades.
whats /toy/?
another jealous of jin forum?
[...] Action Figure Insider [...]
There’s an “Indi Spotlight Fans” blog now. I’m not sure how anyone can be a fan of something that doesn’t exist, but there it is. I guess Geoff is taking the “unofficial” route this time to praise his make believe toys.
From what I’ve seen these figures look great. I hope they do make it into stores such as Toys R Us so they get the chance they deserve and the masses can appreciate them. I really can’t wait for Wave 2.
Here we go and actually get the product in on time as we said we would and get slammed on RTM for it!
“Exactly. Plans are easy to make. Toys are apparently not. nt – Jason Geyer”
Thanks!
How exactly did you “get the product in on time” when Indie Spotlight isn’t even released yet and it’s March 09?! You are in a dream world, my man.
Your NYCC “exclusives” were late, and the actual line of figures isn’t out yet. What EXACTLY did you release “on time”?
Two days later and no reply from Gwarff. Figures.
What exactly has been released “on time” with Indie Spotlight series 1?
And while we’re asking questions you can’t answer, what are you doing to refund the money to the fans of GWAR who pre-ordered the figs? I know for certain there are still people waiting to get their money back from you.
April 5th, and no word on Indie Spotlight Series 1 getting shipped to people. Huh, I guess it’s still sitting on a dock in China, waiting for the container to fill…
…yeah, that’s probably it.
NO BOXES!!
Oh man, so funny! They are delayed now, because Shocker Toys forgot to order boxes! But seriously, they should get some boxes by May or June and rush them right out!
No seriously, that’s what they said.
Fans have them in hand!
Great job! Well…good job. Now how long until the full release that actually hits distributors. However, please give us the actual release date, and not your estimate that is usually waaaaaaay under what actually happens. If you don’t know, please just say you don’t know.
It will hurt your reputation less to say you don’t know, rather than miss another self imposed deadline.
Again, congrats on making a line of action figures.
When can we expect the retail release?
