given how almost every eighties toy line has been rereleased all but m.a.sk. one would think hasbro would look into reissuing the secret wars line provided if they could get the old molds. though given they have their own 3/4 line with mu. odds are unlikely a reissue of secret wars will ever happen. except for the few comic packs hasbro has put out.

One teeny nitpick:
“To this day we do not yet have figures of Baron Zemo 2 and Dazzler, and Constrictor is only just showing up now”
We *did* get a Dazzler in ToyBiz’s subsequent 5″ line. But that’s just me nerding out – great write-up.

om just when i thought all the big toy lines from the eighties had revealed their hidden jems. this article pops up. though surprised Dazzler and not the invisible woman or even Storm of the x-men was going to be the first woman in the first marvel toy line. not to mention Mystique. fasinating find

Is there any comparison to how this line-up (proposed or actually made) holds up to the following lines? (re: Super Powers vs later DC lines)
Did Kang make it to the 5″ line? I know Dazzler only made it to the exclusive “She-Force” line from Previews that eventually wound it’s way to KB.

On the Legends scale, we have Kang (FF subline and later Ares wave), but still no Dazzler, Constrictor or Thunderball.

MU finally revealed Thunderball and the other Wrecking Crew to the world, but is still missing several other key figures from this line.

oh, and Timm RULES.

Great work guys.
That’s a great little article and I had a heck of a time reading it. And who woulda guessed that Bruce Timm did work on Secret Wars! Man, what can’t that guy do? And it still looks like his work, just not SO much in his current style. Great stuff! Heck, I liked the old photo of Jim Shooter even. Solid piece of actual jounalism on a toy site. Weird!

Best action figures ever!!! I had everyone from Series 1 and over half of Series 2. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite, but if I had to, I gotta go with Baron Zemo.

WOW. Just wow. Fellas, thank you so much for putting this together. I was a big Marvel/Secret Wars fan as a youngster (comic and toys) and was always a bit disappointed at the limited selection. I never thought the figures were sub-par and, in fact, really liked the sculpts. Still do. I am immensely curious what the bigger bodies and female bodies look like. Do you think there is enough nostalgia for this line that Mattel would revisit it and actually produce a couple more waves in the SAME style? A 25 year hiatus for a toy line is unheard of but, hey, we are living in “the age of the collector.” Anywho, the Timm art is fantastic. Love the Dazzler series. Its now funny how Secret Wars was my fav superhero line as a kid and JLU is my fav as an adult. Full circle. Thanks again for the great article!

Wow that was a fascinating read. Just when you think there’s nothing new to learn about that time period. I loved that Secret Wars line. To be honest, at the time I was much more a Marvel fan than DC. I collected both Secret Wars and Super Powers, but the Super Powers line was my favorite. I would have LOVED to have a Hulk figure back then.

You guys did an awesome job digging up the facts on this. And the artwork is a treat – oh to imagine what might have been. Thanks for sharing!

Glad ya dug it Sidewinder! I think I can speak for Jason here when I say we had a ton of fun researching it all…

By the way, the Dazzler pieces are some of my favs of the entire lot… with the “Dazzler Vs Villains” being my favorite overall. The detail in that one is really amazing, and it’s similarity in style to Bruce’s later work on Batman is so apparent in it. I literally freaked out when I first pulled that one out of the stack!
