Earlier today I attended a screening of Return of the Jedi to celebrate not just May the 4th (Star Wars Day) BUT the 30th Anniversary of the film. It was screened at the theater where it premiered in 1983, the Egyptian theater. This is the first time in 30 years that the movie has been screened there so it was quite the triumphant return as Return of the Jedi will be screening there all day!

I was at an afternoon screening, I heard rumors that Mark Hamill was going to attend but there were no Star Wars guests at my screening. The morning screening had a cast member of the Clone Wars cartoon. But, we did get Seth Green stopping by to present a very short tribute documentary “Return of the Return of the Jedi”, directed by Kyle Newman. The short features famous fans such as Kevin Smith, Chris Hardwicke, and Donald Faison amongst others, sharing their favorite moments and recollections of Episode VI.

As a kid, Return of the Jedi was the only Star Wars film I owned, recorded off of tv on a cassette. The cassette also had Back to the Future and Lucas, a strange but very 80′s triple feature. Jedi holds a special place in my heart and was my favorite Star Wars movie growing up. My favorite figures were Return of the Jedi figures and my very first Star Wars Figure was Han Solo in Carbonite.

Needless to say I was a fan going in. I held high hopes that we would get an older print and until that Joe Cocker-ish alien started singing in Jabba’s Palace there they remained. Sure I was disheartened, but at least it was the 1997 special edition so no Hayden Vader forced on us.

I love the movie and always will. Obviously there were no surprises but it felt really good watching the movie with a Star Wars audience and while I was bummed Mark Hamill couldn’t make it, Star Wars in the theater is better than no Star Wars any day. I can’t wait until 2015. Happy Star Wars Day!
