The Act You've All Been Waiting For...

"San Diego Here We Come..."

Well, it's that time of the year again: time to be beaten down by the biggest nerd gathering known to man. Yes, my friends, I'm talking about the San Diego ComicCon International. As you can see by the picture at right, Daniel "Julius Marx" Pickett and Jason "ToyOtter" Geyer are on their way down there as you read this, ready to bring you the best Con Coverage on the web! This year looks to be unbelievably huge, with estimated attendance topping 100,000 people. Comic Con has come a long way from being a tiny gathering of locals. These days, all of genre Hollywood turns out to "wine & dine" their target audience, and more importantly for us all the major and minor toy companies show off their upcoming goodies. In terms of brand awareness and consumer relations, SDCC has become a more important event for the companies than the New York Toy Fair. Nowhere is that clearer than in the massive amount of exclusives being offered this year. So enough with the preamble, let's get to the coverage!

Update! "Open Mike" now has an interview with DC Direct Honcho Georg Brewer Online!

While our pictorial coverage won't begin in earnest until Thursday night/Friday morning, we have the best in the business, Mike "SdComics" Walker, standing by with up to the minute reports. He'll be sending up news and commentary throughout the con, so don't forget to keep checking his coverage page.
Again this year, AFI has set up three diverse panels that featured a veritable who's who of both industry professionals and online toy journalists (pictured below is a panel from a previous SDCC). We'll have thorough write-ups of all the panels and possibly even transcripts too once we're back. There will also be a S.T.A.R.R.O. customizing meeting , where you can meet a few online friends and say hello to others you've never met before. Check out the panel line-ups here.

The "Behind the Plastic !" panel from SDCC 2003 with Digger- President and Founder, Art Asylum; Damon Nee- Sr. Product Manager, Toy Biz; Chuck Terciara- Product Manager, Diamond Select Toys; Jesse Falcon- Sr. Product Manager, Toy Biz; Chris Borman- Co-President, Plan B Toys; Tony Simione- Co-President, Plan B Toys; Jay Borman- Co-President, Plan B Toys; Randy Falk - Director of Product Development, NECA Toys; Jerry Macaluso- Owner/President, SOTA Toys; Kim Mattison- Production Assistant, Palisades Toys; and moderator, Julius Marx.

Before we go on to the coverage proper, we just want to say thank you to all of the great pros who are so generous with their time, not just to us, but to all the many fans who came to see them at the panels or just talk to them at their respective booths. Not once have I seen anyone turn away disappointed from talking to guys like Jesse Falcon, Mike Horn, or Georg Brewer. Thanks, guys, for making this hobby such a fun one.

Ok, so what makes this page the one to bookmark and keep visiting? Well, we believe that when you cover an event like this it's not enough just to put up blurry pictures of toys without any labeling or content and declare yourself finished. And if our efforts inspire some sites to rise above their past coverage standards, it's all the better for the readers. Although there are just a handful of us working on covering the con this year, we're going to try our best to keep you fully informed on the new lines and figures, give you interviews and background with the creators, update the sections in a timely fashion, and even maybe have a little bit of video coverage after the con is over.

And that's about it for now. For more good coverage and pictures, the only places you need to go visit are Fwooshnet, Raving Toy Maniac, Action-Figure.com, Simpson Collector Sector, Rebelscum, and YoJoe.com .
