ARLINGTON, VA;  SEPTEMBER 5, 2013 – PBS announced today that Tuesday, October 15, 2013, is “Superheroes Night,” featuring a three-hour block dedicated to the groundbreaking program SUPERHEROES: A NEVER-ENDING BATTLE.  The newest film from Emmy Award-winning producer/director Michael Kantor (BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL; MAKE ‘EM LAUGH: THE FUNNY BUSINESS OF AMERICA) will premiere at 8:00 p.m. ET and include insightful interviews from Stan Lee; actors Adam West (TV’s “Batman”) and Lynda Carter (“Wonder Woman”); Geoff Johns (chief creative officer, DC Comics), Jeph Loeb (head of television for Marvel Entertainment); Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay) and cartoonist/author Jules Feiffer (the long-running strip “Feiffer”), as well as appearances by the late comic book icons Joe Simon (co-creator of Captain America) and Jerry Robinson (who helped create the Joker). A full list of interviewees who appear in the show is located at the end of the release.

SUPERHEROES, cowritten by Kantor and Laurence Maslon, was initially to premiere October 8 and play over three weeks, but the series will now be a one-evening event of super entertainment.

Narrated and hosted by Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Showtime’s Ray Donovan), SUPERHEROES: A NEVER-ENDING BATTLE is the first documentary to examine the dawn of the comic book genre and its powerful legacy, as well as the evolution of the characters who leapt from the pages over the last 75 years and their ongoing worldwide cultural impact. It chronicles how these “disposable diversions” were subject to intense government scrutiny for their influence on American children and how they were created, in large part, by the children of immigrants whose fierce loyalty to a new homeland laid the foundation for a multi-billion-dollar industry that is now an influential part of our national identity.

“SUPERHEROES: A NEVER-ENDING BATTLE is one of the most comprehensive surveys of the vibrant comic book industry ever created; it explores cultural histories in an entertaining and educational way just as PBS viewers have come to expect,” said Donald Thoms, Vice President, Programming and Talent Management for PBS.

SUPERHEROES will be presented in three one-hour parts:

PART ONE, 8 PM: “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” (1938-1958)

During the Depression, the popularity of dozens of superhero characters opens the door for a new generation of artists and writers. World War II creates a patriotic fervor for star-spangled adventurers to represent the American spirit at war and on the home front, but in the 1950s, superheroes are caught in the fire of government scrutiny and regulation. When the thrilling “Adventures of Superman” is broadcast on the new medium of television, America’s first and greatest superhero leads the entire comic book industry to renewed strength.

PART TWO, 9 PM: “Great Power, Great Responsibility” (1959-1977)

In the 1960s, a new breed of superhero emerges in the pages of Marvel Comics, inspired by the age of atomic energy and space travel and, in turn, inspiring the pop culture and pop artists of the time. Spider-Man, the Hulk and others are the first to have “problems” with which an adult audience can identify, and contemporary social issues make their way into comic books. Black powerhouses such as the Black Panther and Luke Cage appear on the scene, and the pages of “Green Lantern/Green Arrow” explode with relevant storylines as comic books are forced to confront the reality of an increasingly complex world.

PART THREE, 10 PM “A Hero Can Be Anyone” (1978-Present)

Modern enthusiasm for superheroes has been embraced in all forms of media and by all demographics, beginning with the historic Superman movie featuring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. In 1986, Batman is overhauled as The Dark Knight to reflect the nocturnal underside of his character, and Watchmen bring new sophistication to comic book narratives, illuminating a violent and politicized world. In the burgeoning new millennium, superheroes have taken over popular culture with feature films, television shows and video games complementing a new generation of web-based comics that bring superhero adventures to every corner of the world.

A new book based on SUPERHEROES: A NEVER-ENDING BATTLE, titled Superheroes!: Capes, Cowls, and the Creation of Comic Book Culture and penned by series co-writer Laurence Maslon and filmmaker Michael Kantor, will be available October 1, 2013, from Crown Archetype, a division of Random House. This stunning companion volume tells the story of the superhero in American pop culture, with interviews, character biographies and more than 500 illustrations both essential and rare.

PBS Distribution will release the DVD and Blu-ray version of SUPERHEROES: A NEVER-ENDING BATTLE on October 15, 2013, coinciding with the PBS broadcast. The DVD will be available for a suggested retail price of $24.99 and the Blu-ray will be available for a suggested retail price of $29.99. The running time is 180 minutes and will include exclusive extra features.

SUPERHEROES: A NEVER-ENDING BATTLE is produced by Ghost Light Films in association with Oregon Public Broadcasting. Along with PBS, major funding for the series was supplied by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Founded in 1996, Ghost Light Films created the critically acclaimed and Emmy-nominated six-part PBS series Make ‘Em Laugh: The Funny Business of America, which was hosted by Billy Crystal and produced by Thirteen/WNET New York, in association with BBC-TV. In 2005, Ghost Light Films produced three hours of documentary material to accompany the 40th anniversary re-release of the film The Sound of Music, including a documentary hosted by Julie Andrews. That same year, Ghost Light garnered the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Nonfiction series for Broadway: The American Musical with Thirteen/WNET New York, NHK Japan and BBC in association with Carlton International. Most recently Ghost Light created Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy (narrated by Joel Grey) for the GREAT PERFORMANCES series on PBS. For more information, visit www.ghostlightfilms.net

AFi’s “Ask Matty” Mattel Q&A Answers for March 15th, 2013 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/afis-ask-matty-mattel-qa-answers-for-march-15th-2013/ Sat, 16 Mar 2013 05:15:15 +0000 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/main/?p=56469 MattyAFiLogoTwice a month the gang from Mattel are kind enough to answer five questions from AFi readers.  The Mattel marketing and PR team, have replied with the answers to our latest round of questions that AFi readers have posted in our forums.  There will not be a posting of answers on January 1st as Mattel will still be closed during that time.

Here is our latest round of questions and their answers:

Q1.  What can you tell us about the new Target exclusive “Justice League” figures that are hitting.  They appear to be recycled Batman: The Brave and The Bold figures with the peg-holes filled in.   There is a 7-pack and some singles all painted in the style of the New 52.  Is this a one time thing or is it an ongoing line?  Any chance we’ll see more of the unreleased Brave and the Bold figures (we got the Flash in this line) like Shazam and Dr. Polaris?

A1.  While we know there is a log of fan demand for some of these unreleased figures, but this assortment is not the avenue to deliver them. This JL line at Target is mostly a kid aimed line that yes, does use some redesigned parts from Brave and the Bold. While we are excited this line also appeals to collectors, adult collectors are not the primary target and characters like Dr Polaris don’t really fit into this type of line. We tried offering some unreleased figures form Young Justice as a preorder on Mattycollector.com and did  not get enough pre orders to go into production. That makes it a little harder to try and resurrect other unreleased figures. The demand is very loud online, but doesn’t always translate to enough actual customers to meet our min orders.

Q2.  Why is Beware the Batman a part of the Batman Unlimited line as opposed to the Power Attacks or Evergreen line? Is Mattel concerned at all about the possibility that the “mom + kid” demographic will balk at the pricepoint for figures from a kids’ cartoon?

A2.  Just because we’ve planned for Beware the Batman figures as part of the Batman Unlimited line doesn’t mean that figures from the new series can’t or won’t appear elsewhere in our toy lines.    These figures feature a fabulous new design about which our Design team is very excited!  The great thing about the Batman Unlimited line is that it allows us to pull from all of the sources of Batman content.

Q3.  Can new slimmer/less muscular biceps be made for the Damian Wayne Robin in the Batman Unlimited line? The ones you’ve shown are way off in scale for the figure. Also is there any chance that Damian can get open hands on the final release? Damian is known for using weapons so even if he doesn’t come with them it would be nice to have the option of putting weapons in his hands.

A3. The final figure of Damian Wayne Robin will have open hands to allow you to have him hold weapons.  The NYTF model was an early version.  In terms of his build, that is staying as is.

Q4.  What are the chances of making the capes on the Batman 66 TV figures soft thin, flexible plastic, or at least put more effort into them if they are staying fabric? As they were shown they look like an afterthought and don’t gel well with the rest of the sculpt on the figures.

A4.  Our Design team considered flexible plastic capes, however this posed a challenge for allowing the figures to sit in the Batmobile.  And Batman and Robin need to be able to sit in the Batmobile!  So the solution was fabric capes.

Q5.  Since we’re getting Beware the Batman 6″ figures in the Batman retail line, what are the chances we could get 6″ Green Lantern Aya and Razer figures in theDC Unlimited line or DCIE subscription (either in animated or comic-style)?

A5.  There are so many possibilities for character selection.  You mention some interesting and exciting options!

If you’d like to ask a question for the  January 15th submission then feel free to post your questions in our Mattel Q&A question submissions thread!   Remember they can be about any Mattel product including MOTUC, Ghostbusters, WWE, any of the Mattel DC lines, Voltron and Cars. Twice a month we draw our submission question directly from the ones that AFi readers post.

You can submit new questions in this thread.

Thanks again to the team at Mattel for taking time to answer our questions!

AFi’s “Ask Matty” Mattel Q&A Answers for November 15th, 2012 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/ask-matty-answers-november-15-2012/ Fri, 16 Nov 2012 00:19:51 +0000 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/main/?p=53304 Twice a month the gang from Mattel are kind enough to answer five questions from AFi readers.  The Mattel marketing and PR team, have replied with the answers to our latest round of questions that AFi readers have posted in our forums.

Here is our latest round of questions and their answers:

Q1.  What is the story on the Red Hood figure shown at NYCC?  Is that for the retail Batman Unlimited line or for the DCIE sub line?  Was that a figure already in the pipeline and that’s why it’s being made?  I don’t recall seeing Red Hood on any wishlists, especially in a costume that only lasted 4 issues.  Hopefully it lands in the Batman line becasue if not this is NOT a good indication of you knowing what collectors are looking for in the Sub. (Or a bit more delecate version of the same question)  why was the short-lived (basically one-off) cape/superhero-y version of Red Hood chosen for the DCIE subscription over the more well known (even by NON-Batfans like me) jacketed version, which could have used the Mr. Terrific/Animal Man buck? I guess I shouldn’t hope for a swappable domino mask head, either?

A1. The Red Hood figure is part of our online CIE program and will be a monthly figure. The version of Red Hood was selected by the Horsemen and approved by DC.

Q2.  It seems like the toys aisles are devoid of any Mattel DC toys so what, if any DC toys will be available at retailers for Christmas?

A2.  The Batman Evergreen line, Dark Knight Rises and DC Unlimited will all be at retail this year!

Q3.  As we now have Fisto and will be getting his evil opposite Jitsu, what are the chances of getting both their steeds Stridor and Night Stalker? Does the fact that these characters, as with Battle Cat and Panthor, (being two figures from mostly one buck) mean that they are likely or has the drop in sub interest killed their chances of being made?

A3.  We would love to get to the robotic horses and TG is a big fan of them having owned Stridor as a kid. While no plans to announce they are on the short list if we can get to them. After all, both use the same “buck” so it would be easier vs. a 100% tool figure that can only be used once (like Ram Man). But no plans right now.

Q4.  Any idea when we will see a preview for the new Batman (60’s show) line and is there an idea of when it will be on the shelves?

A4.  Ideally at NYTF in Feb. But nothing set yet.

Q5.  With Lead, Platinum and Tin coming out, is there a possibility that we’ll see Doc Magnus and Copper figures to complete the Metal Men action figures series?  Also would Alloy be possible as an oversized figure?

A5.  Always a possibility. We don’t have anything locked in but he would be an essential member to really complete the team huh?

If you’d like to ask a question for the  Dec. 1st submission then feel free to post your questions in our Mattel Q&A question submissions thread!   Remember they can be about any Mattel product including MOTUC, Ghostbusters, WWE, any of the Mattel DC lines, Voltron and Cars. AFi’s “Ask Matty” Mattel Q&A Answers for May 1st, 2011 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/mattel-qa-answers-for-may-1st-2011/ Tue, 03 May 2011 07:40:01 +0000 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/main/?p=37581 It’s Green Lantern week!   Sunday May 1st is the release date for Mattel’s Green Lantern movie product.  From what I have seen and what I have read some stores were more ready than others.Target seems to have been the least prepaired.  We’ll have more spotlights on the new GL products this week on AFi.

Twice a month the gang from Mattel are kind enough to answer five questions from AFi readers.  Matty from MattyCollector.com and ToyGuru, have replied with the answers to our latest round of questions that AFi readers have posted in our forums. This is another great round with some really definitive answers. You might not LIKE all of the answers, but you have to appreciate Mattel really being straight with fans this round.

We have already submitted our questions for the May1st round, but you can submit your questions in now for the May 1st round of questions.

Let’s get to the questions and the answers!

Q1. IF TARGET does make an ORDER (BUY) the remaining JLU 3-pk. Case, will it now be 6 JLU 3-pks. instead on 8 ? Meaning will you take OUT the: JSA and ANIMAL MAN/Adam Strange packs because you will be selling them on Matty.com?

A1. At this point we can confirm that Target will not be taking any additional packs beyond there current inventory. The best way to support additional JLU packs to buy the STRIPE single, the fall 7-pack and the Space and Golden Age 3 packs on sale in September. If these packs sell well we can look at releasing the additional packs. The future of JLU is literally in fan’s hands!

Q2.  In The Ghostbusters line, Winston has new head sculpts in both the 12-Inch and 6-Inch scale. Any chance of the other ‘busters getting new head sculpts, particularly Ray Stantz?

A2.  It is something we are always looking into. Ray, Peter and Egon did not change looks as much between films so it was not as much a priority, but when the tooling and resources are available we would love to do this.

Q3. Why show the ’66 Batman TV Show logo used next to some of the Batman Legacy figures (smiley Batman and Batgirl) in your Wondercon display? Is this a hint we will get ’66 style figures? I hope!

A3.  Not a hint. It was an error on the part of our trade show team who used the wrong logo.

Q4. Will MOTUC Leech’s hands be made of a more rubbery material (like his vintage counterpart) or will they use the same plastic of a standard MOTUC hand?" Also will Leech’s hands be on standard swivel joints or will they have the added articulation that we saw on Bow?"

A4.  His hands will use the same plastic as the rest of his body (they will not be actual suction cups) but he will come with a net accessory that has actual suction cups. We are still working out what the articulation level will be.

Q5. What will be the release date for the JLU 7-pack? How much will the set cost?

A5. It will be out in November for $55.00.

The next Q&A have already been submitted, but if you’d like to ask a question for the June 1st submission then feel free to post your questions in our Mattel Q&A question submissions thread!   Remember they can be about any Mattel product including MOTUC, Ghostbusters,WWE any of the Mattel DC lines and Cars.
