I’ve had quite a few fans reach out and ask if I had heard any updates from Mattel on the shipping of the Doomsday Unleashed DCUC figure from MattyCollector.   As you will recall the Doomsday Unleashed went on sale back in November as part of the MattyCollector.com BlackFriday/Cyber Monday sales.    Then on December 1st Mattel posted the following message to the MattyCollector forums:

Just wanted to let everyone know that Doomsday is currently on his way across the Pacific to our distribution centers so he may ship to customers a little later than planned. We’ll ship them out as they arrive, so some customers may get theirs before others. All of them should ship before the holidays, but we’ll let you know as soon as we’ve got more information.

Fans have been waiting for and asking for an update.    News out of MattyCollector has slowed a bit since Scott/ToyGuru left Mattel, but I can assure you that things are still happening behind the scenes!  The Matty division is still finding their legs a bit in this post-Scott world and communication is one of the things they are tackling now.  As a matter of fact, today a new voice for Matty has appeared on the message boards that goes by the handle “Skeletor’s Love Child.”  She just posted the latest update on the status of shipping of the figure:

Hi guys,

Customer Service has been getting a lot of inquires about the status of the Doomsday figures. Unfortunately delivery of Doomsday is currently being held up due to the strike at the Port of Los Angeles.

Though this situation is truly beyond our control, we realize that this doesn’t make it any easier. We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, and promise to get you your Doomsdays as soon as humanly possible.

Skeletor’s Love Child (a Mattel employee and collector enthusiast)

So unfortunately that sort of thing that no one can anticipate or control.   And of course that would affect the shipping and receiving of some items from Matty, possibly beyond even just Doomsday.   As soon as we get another update from Mattel we will pass it along.   In the meantime I would suggest patience.  The figure is still coming and he’s worth the wait!

ScreenHunter_03 Oct. 17 20.56

October 17th, 2014 (Los Angeles) – Mattel brand manager Scott “Toy Guru” Neitlich handed in his letter of resignation this morning at Mattel.   After 9 years of making collector product at Mattel, Scott was headhunted by another toy company and has accepted that position.   While Scott has not yet announced his new role or what company it will be with he assures fans that he will still be making collector product on some major, high profile brands.

Scott was kind enough to sit down with AFi today and do an exclusive, emotional interview just hours after he turned in his letter of resignation and look back on his 9 years at Mattel.   He talks about the possible future of MattyCollector.com, what will happen to the Masters of the Universe Classics line without him, things he is most proud of, things that he didn’t get to do and his message of thanks to all the fans.   Take it away Scott:

We here at ActionFigureInsider.com wish Scott all the best in his new endeavor, and can’t wait until we can talk toys with him at his new position.   Thanks for all the toys Scott!   We know our shelves wouldn’t be half as full without you!

As announced, back in February at Toy Fair 2014, the final figures in Mattel’s long running 6″, Four Horsemen sculpted, DC Universe Classics line will be a series of tributes to the 30th anniversary of Kenner’s beloved DC Comics ‘Super Powers’ 3.75″ action figures.   Mattel is repainting 6 figures (including a collect-and-connect figure) and giving us one last new mini-figure sculpt as a “thank you” to the fans.   In it’s 7+ year run, Mattel’s DC Universe Classics has released 6″ versions of all 34 characters that were released in the 1984-1986  Kenner Super Powers line, however not all of the paint jobs on the Mattel figures matched their vintage counterparts.

I think by now everyone that knows me knows that I am a HUGE fan of the original Super Powers line.  After all we house the Super Powers Archive here on AFi as well as have a dedicated Super Powers blog.  I have loved and encouraged and even helped Mattel out with some of the past DCUC Super Powers figures so I was greatly looking forward to these, and even with Mattel sending me samples I will be buying a second set to keep carded when they are released.

I think it’s important to note that these are merely a Super Powers tribute/homage and not a intended to be a replica in figure or card.   There are quite a few differences in details on all of the cards and figures from their original Kenner release but THIS figure goes above and beyond in capturing a SPECIFIC “white whale” for many collectors – the Argentina only Super Amigos “Riddler” or “El Acerjito” figure.

The Package –  I LOVE the package on this figure.  The fact that they not only made it a Super Amigos card, but that they wrote the whole card in Spanish is the best tribute in this subline.  Just look at it, the bio, the safety warning, even the character names are all in Spanish.

The Figure – This is the third Riddler figure we have gotten in the DCUC line.   I think this is my favorite figure in the 6 figure DCUC Super Powers sub-line.  The original, vintage Super Amigos Riddler was a repainted Super Powers Hal Jordan Green Lantern figure.   Many of the non-Kenner produced Super Powers/Super Amigos figures were produced with much lesser quality with sloppy, shoddy paint and often times the plastic not matching all the parts.  This is why the tribute figure has so many mis-matched greens as the Riddler figure was notorious for having discolored limbs and parts.   It’s a cute detail.

Collection and Connect – The Collect and Connect Kalibak piece is in the mailer box not in the bubble with the figure.  It is polly-bagged and taped to an “L” shaped piece of cardboard in the mailer box so that it’s not in the package with the figure, as that would not be accurate to it’s vintage counterpart.  The Riddler comes with Kalibak’s head and weapon.

Comparison – Unfortunately I don’t have a LOOSE Super Amigos Riddler so the comparison to the vintage figure will have to be carded.

As we learned last year in my interview interview with Scott Neitlich, the Connor Kent Superboy figure was actually sculpted a few years back and was originally scheduled to be part of DCUC Wave 13.  He was going to be a 50/50 split with the ‘Reign of the Supermen” 90′s Superboy that we got in wave 13.   The tooling budget for that wave didn’t cost out for there to be a variant in that wave, so Conner went into limbo.  Until now.   Now Connor will be one of the final 6 figures in the DC Signature Series of 6″ Four Horsemen scupted DC Comics figures.   We almost got an animated 6″ version of this costume and this character in the Young Justice line, but that figure did not meet the minimum preorder number in the Young Justice 2-pack with Miss Martian so it was shelved.

We had an indication that this Superboy figure was out there because he showed up last year as a thumbnail on former Four Horseman, Chris Dahlberg’s new website.  If his face looks familiar it’s because we have seen it before.  Some fans have commented that several of Dalhberg’s DCUC faces looked very similar.  this figure has drawn comparisons to the heads/face sculpts  we saw on Guy Gardner, Omac, Matter Eater Lad, and we see it again here on Connor.

The DC Signature series draws to a close with this second-to-last figure, the fan-demanded Superboy! Conner Kent arrives in the 2000’s look, with black t-shirt and jeans. This member of the Teen Titans and Young Justice League is ready to step into his place in your collection.

The Package –  The package is the same as we have seen in the line for the past 2 years.   The figure ships in the white mailer box, inside is the boxed figure with the window in front, character painting on the side and back and a bio for the character.

The Figure –  The figure is a bit tall, actually standing taller than the Superman figure, and Superboy doesn’t really feel like a teen using this buck.   I get he’s a super teen/clone, but he’s as big as most of the super “grown-ups.”   He has the standard articulation as the rest of the line.    Connor is in his  pre-New 52 Young Justice outfit, black shirt and jeans.   Connor Kent Superboy does not come with any accessories.

DCU Doomsday “Unleashed” Is Coming: Get the Final Figure from the Four Horsemen! http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/dcu-doomsday-unleashed-is-coming-get-the-final-figure-from-the-four-horsemen/ http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/dcu-doomsday-unleashed-is-coming-get-the-final-figure-from-the-four-horsemen/#comments Sat, 06 Sep 2014 03:28:26 +0000 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/?p=107610 Mattel posted a small update yesterday on the upcoming DCSC Doomsday Unbound figure, with a new press photo of the figure with the torn cape:

It’s the toy we never thought we could make, but it’s happening! In a final farewell to the DCU Signature Series and the Four Horsemen, Doomsday arrives… bigger, badder, and totally “Unleashed!”

He was never supposed to see the light of day, but when the powers that be saw the amazing mock-up of this bad boy, they were completely blown away. We got the green light, and the Four Horsemen got to work. We’re stoked to offer this final figure to fans as we say goodbye to the DCU Signature series.

When he arrives later this fall,Doomsday will appear as he did in the best-selling DC comic of all time,Superman #75, where this menace from the stars killed the Man of Steel. This fully articulated figure stands 9” tall and in scale to the 6” tallSuperman™ figure. He includes the shredded cape of Superman™, which is removable, and arrives in huge window box packaging celebrating the completion of the 6” DCU Signature Series line.

Check back for all the details when he goes on sale. In the meantime, you’ve been warned… Doomsday is coming!

I think it’s important to note that these are merely a Super Powers tribute/homage and not a intended to be a replica in figure or card.   There are quite a few differences in details on all of the cards and figures from their original Kenner release.  That said it’s still a nice and fitting end that the line end with a tribute to it’s roots.  While some will argue that the DC Universe Classics line surpassed it’s predecessor in terms of “wow” factor, and certainly DCUC has far surpassed the Kenner line in terms of time and character selection, still all involved with the DCUC line were big fans of the original line and wanted to see it recognized as a blueprint to doing a great line of in the same style and in the same scale DC Comics action figures.

The Package –

One interesting thing about this card is that there appears to be an error corrected by a sticker.   The contents list at the bottom says “One toy figure”

DCUCSPWWSticker

But if you peel back the sticker you see that it originally said: “One toy figure with accessories.”

DCUCSPWWSticker2

The correction is because the SP Wonder Woman figure doesn’t really come with an accessory.   She has her lasso but it is permanently attached to her hip.  It is not removable.

Below is the card of the original Kenner Super Powers Wonder Woman as well as the Gulliver foreign release of WW which both had different artwork than the Kenner version.  As you can see Mattel went their own way on the art on their card and didn’t use either version of these.   I’m not sure why.

SPWonderWomanCardFtGuliverWonderWomanCardFt

The Figure – This figure, like the lighter colored Superman, surfaced on Ebay from Chinese sellers as factory sample discards several a year or so ago.   Clearly Mattel had some plan for her to be released, perhaps in a multi-pack that never came to fruition.   The main difference from her regular release is all of the gold parts are now yellow and her bracelets are now blue instead of silver.

Gold Superman comes with Kalibak’s left arm.

More on Mattel’s Doomsday Unleashed http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/more-on-mattels-doomsday-unleashed/ http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/more-on-mattels-doomsday-unleashed/#comments Sat, 23 Aug 2014 01:52:27 +0000 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/?p=107050

 DCUCDoomsday1

We were overjoyed at the news this week that DC fans would be getting one last figure released on MattyCollector at the end of the year.   Ever since DOOMSDAY Unleashed was announced at the tier 2 figure for the 2014 DC Infinite Earths subscription, fans have wanted this massive Superman villain on their shelves.  However we all know that the 2014 DC sub only reached 63% of it’s needed funding and did not go through. The Doomsday Bound figure was already in production and therefore was changed to be released as a 2014 SDCC exclusive.  But the fans REALLY wanted this guy.

Every time they asked about getting him the answer back from Mattel was was always the same.   We didn’t even reach the tier 1 minimum.   Doomsday Unleashed was not coming.  We were crushed.  The figure was MASSIVE and was an incredible sculpt by the Four Horsemen.  Fans lobbied for this figure every month since July 2013 in every monthly Q&A, on message boards, the Matty Facebook page, fans suggested every possibility, every angle and every scenario to get this figure released and each time we were told “can’t happen.”

It turns out the Matty team wanted this figure too and never gave up hope in still trying to find a home for this figure despite the line it was designed for was cancelled.   They went so far as to design packaging to run it up to the powers that be at Mattel and DC Entertainment… and something cracked.

So how did this “never going to happen” figure get moved into production?  We reached out to our old friend Scott Neitlich on the MattyCollector.com team, and despite him being on vacation, took the time to send us the answer to that perplexing question:

“So basically a toy we NEVER thought was going to happen. We’ve been trying to find a way to make this figure for years and just felt the line would not not be complete without him. Essentially we have tried every angle possible, from a sub incentive to a con item. Finally we just felt, “go for it” and mocked one up as a “looks like model” in package to demonstrate how great it would look as a celebratory item to honor the ending of the 6″ 4HM line. We really felt a line this great deserved to go out on a high note, even if the sub did not hit the minimum.

The packaging team went all out with an almost 360 window box including a slip case with original art by Dan Jurgens. The package comp with toy was just so beautiful no one could say no and we FINALLY got the green light!

Wow, I don’t think the team has ever tried so hard to get a single figure out. I couldn’t be more proud.

This will be without a doubt the final figure in the 6″ line, but what a way to end things?!  Doomsday Unleashed will go on sale before the end of the year and will also include the ripped shreds of Superman’s cape wrapped around his hand (removable soft goods!).

The fans really showed there support and this is our way of saying thank you to our fans as DCU Classics/signature series heads into the sunset!”

We should be seeing Doomsday Unleashed for sale on MattyCollector.com sometime in December.

ScreenHunter_418 Aug. 22 01.12

Thank you to Scott and the Matty team for fighting for this figure and making it happen!

Mattel’s DC Signature Series – ICE http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/mattels-dc-signature-series-ice/ http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/mattels-dc-signature-series-ice/#comments Mon, 16 Jun 2014 06:59:06 +0000 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/?p=103163 I’m not going to re-hash the heartbreak us fans of Mattel’s 6″ Four Horsemen sculpted DC Comics line are experiencing currently.   The line is winding down with the last few figures, despite the recent announcement of Mattel extending their reign the DC Comics master-toy licensee for another 3-5 years.    This week we see the release of the DC Signature Collection Ice figure.  Ice would have been a huge “missing” in the line if we didn’t get her since we got Fire as part of the subscription last year.

We got hook hand Aquaman last quarter, Ice this quarter and will get Superboy next quarter

Ice comes in the standard box packaging we have seen with the run of the Club Infinite Earths subscription.  The box ships in a white outer mailer box.   I’m a little surprised the DCSC figures didn’t switch over to the brown recycled materials mail boxed that the MOTUC sub shifted to this year.   For copyright purposes she is labeled as “DC Comics Ice.”

Tora Olas afsdotter is a princess from the Ice-people of Norway, born with the ability to project ice and snow from her body. As a member of the Global Guardians she meets Fire, and the two become an impressive crime-fighting team and eventually join forces with the Justice League to help stop Doomsday. This long-awaited DC Comics figure arrives with a clear plastic snap-on energy blast and her signature white hair.

ICE’s “ice blast” accessory – Ice comes with one accessory, a clip on “ice blast.”   This translucent piece clips onto the figures of the figure.

DCSC Ice is available to order on MattyCollector.com on June 16th.
