MIDDLETON, Wis., Dec. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — 3…2…1…It’s time to blast off with American Girl’s 2018 Girl of the Year™, Luciana Vega™! Officially launching on January 1, Luciana is the latest in American Girl’s long line of inspiring characters that encourage girls to think about who they want to be and how they want to make their mark in the world—no matter the challenges they may face. In Luciana, girls will meet a creative, confident 11-year-old girl and aspiring astronaut who dreams of being the first person to go to Mars. And, while she has the skills and smarts to achieve her goals, she also learns that being a good leader and team player right here on Earth is the best first step.

American Girl introduces its new 2018 Girl of the Year, Luciana Vega, a creative, confident 11-year-old who wants to be the first person on Mars. Luciana launches on January 1.

“We’re proud to introduce fans to American Girl’s 2018 Girl of the Year, Luciana Vega—a champion of STEM and a natural-born leader who puts her whole heart into making her dreams a reality,” says Katy Dickson, president of American Girl. “Luciana is a role model for today’s girls—empowering them to defy stereotypes, and embrace risks that will teach them about failure and success as they chart their own course in life—whatever the goal. For us, it’s all about building girls of strong character, and it’s why we’re continuing to encourage girls to lead change and embrace #charactercounts.”

Luciana’s world comes to life via a beautiful 18-inch Luciana™ doll, featuring warm brown eyes, medium skin, and dark brown hair with a distinctive purple streak to show off her creative side.    Other STEM-inspired outfits, accessories, and products that reflect her Space Camp® experience include Luciana’s Flight Suit and Space Suit, her Maker Station, and a Mars Habitat loaded with science and research essentials for hours of pretend play. And—for the first time—girls can further engage in Luciana’s world by downloading the American Girl app and scanning her catalogue pages and products to unlock exclusive content, including augmented reality, trailers and videos, space simulations, quizzes and challenges, and much more.

Additionally, Luciana’s story is chronicled in a chapter book series written by Erin Teagan and published by Scholastic. The first two books, available now, introduce readers to Luciana, a young girl of Chilean descent with a serious science streak, who loves the idea of exploring new territories in space. After winning a scholarship to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, Luciana is thrilled to launch her dream of landing on Mars. But as she ascends from Space Camp kid to youth astronaut trainee, she faces many challenges that test her competitive spirit and self-confidence, and she must find the courage to embrace the unknown with bravery, curiosity, and wonder.

To help ensure the accuracy of Luciana’s story and product line, American Girl worked with the following four-member Advisory Board who were integral to Luciana’s development: Dr. Ellen Stofan, former NASA Chief Scientist; Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center; Dr. Megan McArthur Behnken, NASA Astronaut; and Maureen O’Brien, Manager of Strategic Alliances at NASA. In addition, a team of American Girl editors and product designers visited Space Camp and NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston to gain insight into a day in the life of a Space Camp trainee—from putting on space suits and learning about the “right” way to eat in space to conducting a mission in micro-gravity. American Girl’s partnership with NASA was developed through the Space Act Agreement to inform and inspire the wider public (and especially young girls) about the excitement of space and STEM careers.

To engage girls and boys with Luciana’s message, American Girl—in partnerships with Scholastic, NASA, and Space Camp—has funded Blast Off to Discovery, an educational program to help third though fifth-grade students explore the wonder of space through Luciana-inspired content, including STEM-based lesson plans and classroom activities, videos, a game, and more. The program will be available on starting January 31, 2018. In addition, American Girl and Scholastic will host a Mission to Mars Sweepstakes where families can go on a series of weekly missions for a chance to win several prizes, including a grand prize trip to Space Camp valued at over $2,000.

Other Luciana-related initiatives being held throughout the year include the following:

  • Luciana Retail Events: On January 1, American Girl stores nationwide are hosting Luciana’s Debut Event, where girls can celebrate the company’s first STEM-themed character with fun, interactive science demonstrations, a Moon Phase craft, galaxy-inspired treats, and a free Luciana doll tee to take home. @MEGAContrux Christmas to You! @Mega Closes in on A Decade of #Halo Sets #Ad Sun, 24 Dec 2017 18:00:22 +0000

The combination of MEGA™, which pre-dates the Mattel acquisition of MEGA™. HALO™ is MEGA™’s longest running video game license and in those 8 years they have been able to produce a significant amount of sets tying into the long running video game franchise. MEGA™’s dedication to this franchise moves beyond just a cool collection and into world building!

We’ve seen several other toy companies try their hands at HALO™ toys in the past, but NO ONE could touch the world building that is possible through the Mega Construx™ HALO™ sets.  Everything is possible with MEGA®, from Spartans, to Covenant and Brutes, endless vehicles and even environments. MEGA™ has touched every corner of the HALO™ universe.  Much like their Call of Duty sets, this is the perfect marriage of license and materials. Refreshingly, MEGA™ is not chained to a certain brick design element and therefore are unafraid to develop new parts to fit whatever sets or worlds they are creating leading to more accurate and realistic sets.

There are a wide variety of set sizes and price points available to fans, everything from single carded mini-figures all the way up to large vehicles, set pieces and bosses. So no matter your budget,  there is a MEGA™ HALO™ set available in your price range in stores now.

In this feature we are going to look at three recent Mega Construx™ HALO™ sets:

First up is the Incinerator Cyclops – This set is a mech suit for the minifigures, so you know it’s got to be awesome. The set comes with a UNSC Flame Marine that fits inside the mech suit. The minifigure has a stand and comes with a hefty flame-thrower that is attached to a tank on his back.  The mech suit has a full range of articulation, as well as having its own flamethrower attached to a much larger tank on the mech’s back. This set is 162 pieces and is recommended for ages 8+.

Next, we have the CTF Artic Warthog.  Warthogs are some of the most iconic vehicles in the HALO™ universe.  This set includes three minifigures: the Spartan Mark VI (Gen I), Spartan Rogue and the Spartan Recon. The Warthog holds all three figures, comes with rubber tires, a mounted roof cannon and a working wench. The figures also have a strong personal arsenal that includes: an SMG, shotgun, magnums and both plasma and frag grenades. Each figure has a stand, and the set includes an ammo box and a banner flag.  This set is 311 pieces and is recommended for builders 8+.

Finally, we take a look at the UNSC Wolverine Charge Vehicle. This set is BIG and took me over an hour to complete.  The set comes with three minifigures: UNSC Flame Trooper, UNSC Marine and a banished Brute. They are armed with an assault rifle, a flame thrower and the brute shot.  But, the real fire power comes from the Wolverine Charge itself which brandishes mounted duel missile batteries. Each of these batteries can launch up to six missiles and is swivel mounted to help stop the Brute hoard.  The cockpit opens and will fit one of the UNSC minifigures.  This set is a whopping 759 pieces and is recommended for builders 8+.

Each of these sets are complex and satisfying builds that are indicative of the fun complexity of the rest of the Mega Construx™ HALO™ line. You have to remain engaged and pay close attention to the easy to follow instructions or you will have problems.  These sets are like putting together a really fun and satisfying puzzle, but at the end,you can play with it!

Mega Construx™ has a wide range of great HALO™ sets available now, featuring all of your favorite Spartans, beasts, vehicles and environments.  You can check out more of what’s available and what your fellow fans are doing with their sets at –™

AFi Takes a Look at Mega Construx™ – Destiny #Ad Thu, 12 Oct 2017 11:00:19 +0000

MEGA™  has been taking the store shelves, as well as collector’s shelves, by storm with their licensed construction sets geared toward kids aged 8+ and collectors, recently rebranded as Mega Construx™.  While some consider the brand’s early offerings to be just another brand of construction toys, the MEGA™ team has been pushing the envelope beyond what most fans thought was possible with construction toys as they have picked up more and more top shelf licenses. If you have not checked out a Mega Construx™ set recently, you are missing out on some really fun and complex builds.

One of MEGA™’s recent video game license acquisitions is the run-away smash franchise, Destiny, which earlier this month released their newest installment Destiny 2.  MEGA™ already had a relationship with game publisher Bungie because of their work together on the Halo franchise, so Destiny was a logical extension.  MEGA™ began releasing sets based on the original Destiny game in 2016 and have  recently debuted new sets based on Destiny 2.

Destiny is a game well suited to be represented in a construction toy line, and MEGA™ has done a clever job in making a robust line with a lot of added play value.  At the center of the game are the Guardians, and in-game they are highly customizable/upgradable with their weapons and armor.  MEGA™ uses that premise in their mini-figures, as well with the smaller sets, which feature extra upgradable armor pieces and weapons for the characters. When those pieces are not in use, you can put them on the base which doubles as a display/armory. The two sets I received are the smaller, single figure sets of Warlock Samsara Amory and Warlock Hezen Lords Armory.  MEGA™ even takes advantage of the three-pronged Destiny logo to be the figure base that also supports the armory display.  The Mega Construx™ mini figures have a surprising amount of articulation for figures of their size. The Warlocks sport a ball jointed head, ball jointed shoulders, ball jointed swivel elbows, swivel wrists, swivel waist, partial ball jointed hips with swivel and hinged knees! All of that articulation allows for a wide range of motion as well as poseability of the figure.

Both of these sets are quick builds with nearly 40 pieces, making them great display pieces. In MEGA™’s Destiny line, there is a wide variety of figures, factions, vehicles and environment sets with varying levels of construction difficulty. MEGA™ keeps a very fun and detailed website that shows you each of the sets and figures regardless if it’s a Guardian, Vex, Fallen, Cabal or Hive –

Mega Construx™ pulled out all of the stops with their 2017 showing this summer at SDCC. One of the most impressive exclusives of the show was their Destiny® Iron Song Ghost Shell set! This impressive presentation for any Destiny fan came complete with a figure of Lord Saladin, and a buildable almost 1:1 scale ghost with a light up feature and stand! The set comes in a specially-made Rise of Iron-themed box with an engram inside, perfect for holding all of your precious loot. The presentation is stunning, from the white and gold-printed outer box to the magnetic closures on the lid.  They already command high prices on the secondary market if you missed out on getting one of these when they were first available.

Mega Construx™ has a wide range of Destiny and Destiny 2 sets available now, featuring all of your favorite characters, beasts, vehicles and environments.  You can check out more of what’s available and what your fellow fans are doing with their sets at –

The Details of ALL of the @Mattel DC Multiverse Justice League Movie Exclusive Figures Thu, 07 Sep 2017 15:17:21 +0000 By now everyone should have seen the regular 6″ DC Multiverse Justice League movie figures in stores:

There are 6 figures/characters in the main line and if you buy them all you can “Collect and Connect” the parts to build Steppenworlf, the main villain of the upcoming film.

While several of the store exclusive figures were shown at the Mattel booth at San Diego Comic Con, they were not labeled with the information where/when they will be released.  We have talked to the Mattel team and gathered all of the information into one post for easy access.

Here is the complete rundown of the exclusives for Mattel’s 6″ DC Multiverse Justice League action figure line:

The (non -tactical suit) Batman and Armor Mode Cyborg are both Walmart exclusives and should be hitting stores soon.  Images of packaged versions both of these figures have surfaced on-line recently.  They both come with 3 Mother Box accessories instead of a Collect and Connect piece.

Mera is an exclusive and is currently up for pre-order on the site.  Her estimated release date is November 15th.

The product copy says: In the thrilling new Justice League movie, DC Super Heroes and DC Super-Villains battle to control Earth! This 6″ Mera figure lets fans recreate key action with the great undersea warrior. The captivating figure features green scaled suit, iconic crown, and a signature weapon accessory.

Her “signature weapon accessory” are the swappable hands.

Toys R Us  has a shirtless tattoo Aquaman and Green Parademon exclusive for figures.

Toys R Us will also have the $60.00 Multiverse Batmobile (non RC version).  You can see it as the centerpiece of the Comic Con display above.

NOT shown at SDCC is a Target exclusive Multiverse 2-Pack of the Flash: From Page to Screen 2-pack we showed earlier this week.
This 2-pack has a newly re- decoed Rebirth Flash, and a translucent red movie Flash w/ Ezra Miller interchangeable head and two sets of hands that can also be swapped out with the mainline Multiverse movie Flash’s hands.

With the prerequisite lightning effects in blue and yellow, display bases, and bakdrop cards.

Target wants to be “The Home of the Flash” when the movie hits, so they requested this 2-pack.  As of this writing Mattel has not created any other movie/comic 2-packs like this for any of the other Justice League characters.

The last exclusive was the San Diego Comic Con exclusive Cyborg “Origins” figure in the special Mother Box packaging.  It is currently listed on the Mattel Vault website, but not currently available for sale there.

So there you have it!   If you are planning to collect the 6″ Mattel DC Multiverse Justice League movie figures that is everything and everywhere you will need to be on the look out to pick up.
