WHICH ACTION FIGURE DESERVES TO BE CALLED THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME? http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/which-action-figure-deserves-to-be-called-the-greatest-of-all-time/ http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/which-action-figure-deserves-to-be-called-the-greatest-of-all-time/#comments Mon, 30 Jun 2014 04:27:05 +0000 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/?p=103946 ScreenHunter_394 Jun. 29 21.14
The Action Figure Hall of Fame has been created to honor those toys who have stood the test of time and become part of the fabric of Pop Culture.  It seems fitting that 50 years after Hasbro introduced the first action figure, the G.I. Joe line,  we begin to recognize some of the greats and immortalize them in their very own hall of fame.

Each year 10 figures will be inducted. This will be based on the results of a poll that will be circulated widely online.  The two basic criteria for consideration are: 1) the figure must have been released at least 25 years ago, and 2) the figure must be cool.

The ballot for the first 10 inductees will be open until October 30, 2014. Go to: actionfigurehalloffame.com to vote now!

The “Hills” Are Alive… With Toys! http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/the-hills-are-alive-with-toys/ http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/the-hills-are-alive-with-toys/#comments Tue, 08 Jan 2013 16:55:43 +0000 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/marxblog/?p=683 Over the holidays I was talking to fellow AFi staffer Cantina Dan about the “olden days” of collecting and I mentioned my time in the mid 90’s out east and hitting “Hills” department stores as part of my regular run.   I never had Hills in the mid-west and they seemed to be a treasure trove of old and new toys I was looking for (and some that I was not looking for).  They were great for finding new 5″ Toy Biz Marvel figures, Kenner’s Aliens (and Predator) line and Playmates Star Trek figures as well as full runs of clearance Swamp Thing, Pee Wee’s Playhouse and Nightmare Before Christmas.

I WISH they were still stocked with the vintage toys in these old commercials!   I would have very much liked to have walked in and found endcaps of Shogun Warriors, Micronauts and Generation 1 Transformers!  I stumbled across these the other day on YouTube and they were just too weird and wonderful not to share.

All the Hills discount stores are gone now.  But their memory and their commercials live on!

AFI 5th Anniversary – '5 For 5' with Frank Supiot http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/5-for-5-with-frank-supiot/ Tue, 11 May 2010 11:29:40 +0000 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/main/?p=6507

‘5 For 5’

Here’s another installment of a new feature we’ve been running this month as part of AFi‘s 5 Year Anniversary called "5 for 5."  We got some many great replies from our friends all over the industry that we are extending our 5th Anniversary Celebration on into May!

We asked a wide range of friends in the industry 5 questions about the last 5 years and let them answer however they wanted…

Many of you will know Frank Supiot from his time at Kotobukiya.   He was ever-present at their booth at Comic Con last year putting up eight hours of fun and programing at the Koto booth.   Now Frank has moved on to work with the gangs over at Super7.   Super7 are the mad geniuses that are drilling a hole in my wallet by combining two of my favorite things from the 70’s – Star Wars and Shogun Warriors.

Let’s see how Frank faces down ‘the Big 5’

Name: Frank Supiot

Position: Super7’s Director of Licensing

HTTP://STARWARS.SUPER7STORE. COM

1.  How would you say has the industry changed in the last 5 years?

I can guess many common replies that others may share, so I will try to pick something a little different:   It is more difficult to impress consumers today by simply by announcing a license.

Five years ago, all you had to do was say that you had signed license “X”, and fans of “X” would be there ready to collect the entire line.   Now, people are much more selective and want to see what you plan to do with the property.   Personally, I think that I am now the same way with my collecting habits, so I’m certainly not criticizing anyone.   It also results in companies being more creative in order to succeed, and anything that promotes added creativity is fine by me!

2.  What about YOUR job has changed in the last 5 years?

The conventions continue to become a more important event, and demand more time and attention.   I don’t think it is overstating to say that collector toy companies build their year around San Diego Comic Con the way mass market companies build theirs around Christmas.

3.  What is your weirdest Convention experience from the past 5 years?

I have a drunken Kenny Baker story that might not be fit for print.  But at this point, I think everyone has a drunken Kenny Baker story.

4.  What is one product that you worked on in the past 5 years that never made it to store shelves?

Keeping in spirit of the anniversary theme, shouldn’t you be asking for FIVE toys which never saw the light of day?   I’ll thank you for only asking for one!     A 1/6th scale statue of a really gorgeous plant-themed character based on illustrations by some guy that did HUSH might have been of interest to fans….but alas….it was not meant to be.

5.  What do you anticipate will be different in the industry or your job in the next 5 years?

I think we will see great advancement in reduction preproduction and production time for toys.  Most of which will come form digital sculpting, rapid prototyping, and cad development.    It really would be fantastic to be able to go from concept to shelf in six months, which today is practically impossible.

Thanks to Frank for his participation.   Make sure you keep your eyes here on AFi for all the news and new developments coming from Super7!

ABOUT SUPER7

Founded in 2001 as a magazine devoted to the obsessive-compulsive world of Japanese toy collecting, Super7 embarked on a mission to become the premiere outlet for information and reference for the obscure oddities of the toy universe. The success of the magazine immediately led to Super7 collaborating with Japanese toy manufacturers to create exclusive toys and various special editions, evolving over time to Super7 designing and manufacturing its own collectible toys.

Super7’s philosophy is to make products- toys, books, magazines, t-shirts, and even their own retail store in San Francisco- that its collector founders would want, resulting in Super7’s products being recognized by fans as original, unique, and most of all, genuine.

Super7 Reveals Star Wars Stormtrooper Super Shogun! http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/super7-reveals-star-wars-stormtrooper-super-shogun/ Thu, 18 Feb 2010 00:26:52 +0000 http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/main/?p=6304

Super7 announces full product details and a new website for the company s first collaboration with Lucasfilm Ltd.: the highly anticipated Star Wars Stormtrooper Super Shogun.

Children growing up in the 70s and 80s had their lives touched by two pop culture phenomena: the Star Wars saga and Jumbo Machinder toys (marketed in the US as Shogun Warriors). Acclaimed toy design firm Super7 has combined Star Wars characters with the towering Japanese Super Robot aesthetic to create a collectible that could only have been imagined in the past. This marks the first authentic Super Shogun produced in over twenty-five years.

The Star Wars Stormtrooper Super Shogun stands a whopping 24 inches tall, and includes all of the features that you expect from an authentic Jumbo: free rotating wheels on the bottom of his feet, and a spring-loaded Rocket Punch firing fist. Utilizing the same techniques implemented by Japanese toy manufacturers in the 1970s, the Super Shogun is constructed from durable, blow-molded polyethylene with a painted vinyl helmet. The figure is articulated at the neck and shoulders, and includes a removable, highly-detailed BlasTech E-11 laser blaster, which even features a posable stock that unfolds from below the barrel. Collectors of both Japanese and Star Wars memorabilia are sure to be impressed with the care taken to fuse the disparate concepts into one unique entity.

Packaged in a dynamically illustrated gift box, each Stormtrooper is individually serial numbered as part of this one-time limited edition production run. As a special bonus, metallic foil stickers are included to allow fans the option to customize the torso with the character name in English or in Japanese.

Star Wars collector and Lucasfilm s Head of Fan Relations Steve Sansweet says he can t wait to get his hands on one. I collected both Shogun Warriors and Star Wars toys, and to me this is the perfect mash-up. I ve been following this piece since I saw the first internal prototype, and its awesome size and cool features (a firing fist!) along with its limited availability put this high up on the must-have list.

Tom Franck, renowned Japanese toy expert and possessor of one of the largest collections of Jumbo Machinders in the world, remarked Toys like this just aren t made anymore and it would be easy to produce a modern-era product that is similar to the original Jumbo Machinder line in name only. Throughout the prototyping and manufacturing process, Super7 has stayed true to the distinct aesthetics of the Jumbo Machinders. It is so exciting to see the return of a classic, and I cannot wait to add it to my collection.

In celebration of the impending release, a dedicated mini-website has launched at STARWARS.SUPER7.COM containing additional product specifications, photos, and more. The home page features a countdown clock highlighting the date that the first preorders will begin being accepted online. The site will be updated regularly and will serve as the headquarters for all future Super7-Lucasfilm collaborations.
