The Custom Cantina Coalition
August 9, 2010

I know, I know.  I love Star Wars, as many of you out there undoubtedly do.  Hasbro has given us some great figures, box sets, and even vehicles like the awesome new AT-AT.  However, even though their scale is tailor-made for it, Hasbro has publicly stated time and again that playsets just aren’t in the cards.  We can discuss the reason for this heartbreaking decision until the proverbial cows come home (to produce blue milk, no doubt), or we can do something about it.

That’s pretty much how this little venture started.  A local friend and artist simply named “Talker” and I got to talking over drinks one night, and decided that our shelves needed, nay – demanded we do something about it, and the partnership was formed.  He’s amazingly talented with wood.  He’s got 30 years experience and all the tools needed, and he cranks out shapes and plans faster than anyone.  We agreed on our first project – The Cantina, and started drawing up plans, gathering materials, the usual stuff (all the pics after the jump!)

Over a hundred hours later, you have what you see below.  Talker built the wood superstructure, and I took it from there, adding texture, paint, accessories, electronics; basically everything else.  Yes, the band even plays the music.  The Jawa is hard-wired in, and his LED eyes shine bright with the flick of a switch!  We are now moving on to new projects; The Death Star (sneek peek below), 3-level Jabba’s palace, even a re-imagining of that awesome Hoth display from Comicon this year.  I promise you’ll all be along for the ride, enjoy!

Um, wow! That’s insane and insanely impressive. Where you gonna put it?

    • Sector1014, we’ve got some pretty big toy rooms here in Sin City, so that’s on the shelf on display at Talker’s house. I’ll show some pics of my collection soon in an upcoming blog, and you’ll see that there’s room. Now the Hoth display is looking like it’ll be 30″ X 72″, and that will take up some serious space!

    Hot Damn Steve!

I just can’t get over how sweet that is!

I was just digging around in my SW bins and thought “Man, a nice Cantina display would be great…”

No way I could ever make anything as awesome as yours though!

    Great work!

    • Please, Spy Magician! I am such a fan of your work it is crazy! We’re thinking of redoing the Cantina again at some point, but for now as you can see the Death Star is up next, and the plans are drawn for the Jabbas Palace, and I belive construction began this past weekend. It’s going to be a full 3 level display, including the Rancor dungeon underneath! Thank you for your kind words 🙂

Man, that is one seriously wicked Cantina!

    Great job, Steve.

Obviously, I have no interest in the Cantina, but I read your blog anyway. Your options:
    1) Agree to trade this to me for a full set of MEGO Love Boat figures, or
    2) Provide me with your address and when you plan to be away from home.

Seriously, this is way awesome. Great job to you and Talker! I have a feeling this is something that really does need to be seen in person. Thanks for posting all the pics.

Thank you so much for your kind words, CantinaDan. We built two of them simultaneously, I still have one built, but unpainted/unfinished. It’s the completed wood structure. If you ever wanted to work something out, just in case you HAD to have one, trade,’whatever ‘just email me 😀
And no, no Love Boat Megos please 😉

    Men of Action –
We need to get together for a little gathering, a “Geek Night”, as it were. I can host in Vegas, and we can sit around and discuss such matters! Julius & Toy Otter are 2 of the founding fathers of the original geek night, we even had an exclusive one time! I think we should convene in the fall, once the weather cools down!

I’ve seen these pictures before just cuz I know Steve, but it’s still a thing of wonder.

THIS was the sort of playset I always wanted as a kid.

nicely done. Can’t wait to see how the Death Star progresses.
