This year’s event also introduces a third day of festivities for members of the press and toy industry professionals on Friday, November 3rd. The Media & Industry Preview Night provides industry members with advance access to exhibitors, entertainment, and play experiences to see firsthand which toys, games, and entertainment will be the biggest hits just in time for Black Friday.

“Inspired by last year’s success, we are thrilled to expand Play Fair in NYC and invite industry influencers and the press to be the first to enjoy the fun with an exciting, hands-on Industry Preview Night,” says Kelly Comboni, president of LeftField Media. “From over-the-top play experiences and activities to feature stages, meet-and-greets, and more, this year’s Play Fair promises lasting memories for every kid and kid at heart.”

During the Media & Industry Preview Night, The Toy Association will also unveil the finalists for the 2018 Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards. Known as the “Oscars” of the toy industry, the TOTY awards program supports children in need by serving as a critical fundraising event for the Toy Foundation, while recognizing the top toys of this holiday season.

“Play Fair highlights play and entertainment during peak toy season, and is the perfect backdrop to unveil and celebrate the 2018 TOTY finalists,” says Ken Seiter, executive vice president of marketing communications at The Toy Association. “The TOTYs recognize the year’s hottest toys and games – all of which build important, lifelong skills through play. The nominated toys also highlight great gift ideas for kids of all ages for the upcoming holiday season.”

The inaugural Play Fair was held in February 2016 with a sold-out crowd of more than 20,000 parents, children, and toy enthusiasts. Building on last year’s success, the upcoming Play Fair will also feature more character appearances, and the Toys”R”Us main stage will double its seating to accommodate twice the number of excited fans. Daniel Pickett
Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett has been around toys his whole life. The first line he ever collected was Mego’s World’s Greatest Super Heroes line back in the 70s. He has been surrounded by collectables ever since. In 1999 he was confounded by a lack of information and news about some of his favorite toy lines he was collecting. Since he couldn’t find the information he decided to pursue it himself thinking other people might also be interested in the same news. He started writing a weekly column on the toy industry and action figure for a toy news site and in a years time he tripled the sites daily traffic with his updates, reviews and product features. He built relationships with every major toy manufacturer and many sculptors, painters and mold makers. He grew his hobby into a world wide expertise that the industry has embraced. In 2004 he teamed up with his toy buddy Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and they created their own website www.ActionFigureInsider.com. Daniel has been quoted in both industry and mass media press outlets. Over the years Daniel and AFi have been sought out as experts in the field. Daniel was regularly featured on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 network as the primary contributor to their “Mint On Card” segment, and our front page has been linked to from USA Today’s “Pop Candy” Blog twice. Daniel’s content has also been featured on MSNBC.com, Time.com, The Wall Street Journal, The Saturday Evening Post, CNN.com, AssociatedPress.com Wired.com, Fark.com, Boing-Boing, Gizmodo.com, Ain’t It Cool News, the Official Star Wars blog, Geekologie, G4, CNet and Toy Fare magazine, among many others. He has consulted on toy lines, books, documentaries and TV shows. But all of that really just sounds snooty and “tootin’ his own horn” – the long and short of it is that Daniel loves toys and he LOVES talking about them.
