To Infinity And Beyond…the Disney Universe!
May 2, 2014

Disney’s Infinity video game system is about to get a major (albeit expected) upgrade when it adds the Marvel Universe stable of character to the line-up in Fall 2014!

“Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition will launch in September 2014, executive producer John Vignocchi said during this week’s episode of the game’s official webcast.

After showing off the Marvel Super Heroes toys set to arrive with the next version of the real-world toy/video game hybrid, Vignocci advised viewers to “check out all the Avengers that are going to be part of the 2.0 edition of Disney Infinity out this September.” Disney Interactive and developer Avalanche software unveiled Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition, which is headed to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, Windows PC and iOS, at an event earlier this week. Six figures have currently been announced for Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes’ launch. It shouldn’t be any surprise to hear that they’ll be The Core Avengers: Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye.

However, with the announcement trailer several other character have been revealed in-game. Whether or not they’ll eventually be made into figurines is unclear, but they’re certainly going to be part of the game in some way or another. Here are the heroes and villains teased in the trailer: Spider-Man, Green Goblin, Nick Fury, Loki, MODOK, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon! The next installment will also add larger play sets, flight, hovering, skill trees and new ways to construct your own Toy Boxes.”

This news couldn’t have come at a better time for Disney Interactive. Even though Disney Infinity has sold over 3 Million copies since its launch last year, it is one of the few bright spots in the mouse’s attempts to be a leader in the video game world on par with its success in the film and TV realms. Last fall, John Pleasants stepped down as co-president, after leading the launch of “Disney Infinity and just two months ago Disney Interactive had substantial layoffs, in the neighborhood of 700 heads, to trim down under-performing teams and consolidate the Marvel based games into the existing structure.

While Disney Infinity’s prime rival, Activision’s Skylanders, is still a threat to be reckoned with, having over $2 billion worth of sales and a new edition, Skylanders: Trap Team, hitting soon, Infinity has not only already passed it in sales (to be fair, the Disney figurines also carry a higher price point that those of Skylanders) and are only beginning to scratch the surface of the library of characters available. As is, finding the 2 Frozen characters are near impossible and outside of Mickey Mouse, no pre-2000s, non-Pixar characters have yet made it into the game.

And the REAL coup-de-grace will be the rumored introduction of the Star Wars universe to the game, coming possibly in 2015 to ti in with the start of the new Star Wars movie trilogy (to say nothing of Indiana Jones also joining in). Will the force continue to be with Disney as time goes by? Don’t be surprised to see an entire aisle in ToysRUs devoted to just one game as 2016 dawns.
