Manufacturer: Mattel

Release Date:  March 15th, 2012

Wave/Assortment:  2012 Club Eternia Figure

Packaging: Single boxed

Accessories:

    • Alternate "hooded" head
    • Gun
    • "Pixel" creature

    Scale: 6"

    Sculpted By: The Four Horsemen

Notes: Delayed slightly because of the Chinese New Year.  Kobra Kahn comes with a gun and a spare cobra “hooded” head as well as a little lizard pal… some will call “Pixel.”   Kobra has some great new parts such as his torso and calves.  He doesn’t sport the traditional MOTU loincloth, but instead uses a unique rubber over-piece that gives him more specific trunks that match his vintage figure sculpt.

There were no issues with the one I received.  The heads are easily swappable, and all his joints are tight.   The little “Pixel” lizard sits on his shoulder or “snake suspenders” with a little groove sculpted into the bottom, and he sits just fine on mine using either head.   The gun only fits in the right hand as the left hand is sculpted in a more open “claw” pose.

    Manufacturer: Mattel

    Release Date:  December 15th, 2011

    Wave/Assortment: Online Exclusive/December 2011 Club Eternia Figure

    Packaging: Single boxed

    Accessories:

    • Sword
    • Mace/morning star
    • Alternate skull head with helmet
    • Alfredo Alcala Skeletor head

    Scale: 6"

    Sculpted By: The Four Horsemen

Notes:  This figure is based on the original Mark Taylor concept art for Skeletor.  In hindsight we can see that many of the sketches features ended up being incorporated into Beast-Man, but within the new story line of MOTUC Demo-Man was fused with Keldor by Hordak to become Skeletor.

There is a lot to love about this character – he’s the other side of the coin to Vikor, who was based on the original He-Man sketch, he’s bright, vibrant and neon green.  he features a lot of new parts, he has great accessories and even better extras.  Mattel and the Four Horsemen really pulled out all the stops on this figure.  They even went so far as to sculpt the little tuft of hair on his left shoulder that is seen in the original sketch.  The figure also come with the jaw-less barbarian skull head that is seen in the original sketch.   They also made it possible for you to snap it onto a neck peg of a MOTUC figure.   I’m not sure who you would use that for.  Because there is no lower jaw that head sits really low and not very natural looking, but I give Mattel points for making it more than just decorative.

The other big draw for this figure is that he comes with a Skeletor head based on the vintage comic book work of Alfredo Alcala.  This is an extra many MOTU fans have been waiting 30 years for, and when it’s in place it makes your Skeltor figure so much more gruesome and unsettling.

    Manufacturer: Mattel

    Release Date: November 17th , 2011

    Wave/Assortment: MattyCollector.com exclusive

    Packaging: 7-pack (in a 6-pack style box)

    Accessories:2 stands

    Scale: 4"

    Sculpted By: Mattel’s In-House Team

    Packaging by: Frank Varela

Notes:  This boxed set includes Crimson Avenger, Creeper, Gypsy, Doctor Midnight, Johnny Thunder and his Thunderbolt and Speedy.  These seven characters are the final 7 card-carrying members of the Justice League in the show that Mattel had not made figures of.

Back in August I told you about seeing an early sample of the MattyCollector.com JLU 7-figure boxed set, and described the box and the changes to the decos from what we saw at comic con.  Now I have a sample of the set in hand so you can see it for yourself.

As of this writing, this boxed set is the last JLU product that Mattel has scheduled to offer.  They have said that if this set sells well then we might see the remaining 3-packs they announced at Toy Fair.  I would think this set should do well as it is the first time we have gotten this many unique figures in one set with no re-releases.   There are also some great new parts for customizers in this set such as a new body in a suit and female bare feet.   I’ve collected this line from the start and would love to see it continue, but with the numbers JLU has been selling on line the fate of those last figures does not look good…

As I mentioned in the August article about this set there maybe one character in the line up of heroes that wrap around the box that fans don’t recognize.   That’s Mattel package designer Frank Varela who has worked on the JLU packaging from the beginning of the line.   Can you spot him?
